Overview AmeriCorps members serve as Junior Counselors who play a pivotal role in the lives of 2000 at‑risk youth, ages 2‑13. Members are placed at 16 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 2 community centers in North Brooklyn to support after‑school programs with three basic needs around community wellness: academic support, SEL/mental health support, and community and family engagement.
Through mentorship, members help children develop critical socio‑emotional skills, including empathy, decision‑making, community building, and conflict resolution.
Member Duties
Mentor and assist with the administration of a student caseload through regular check‑ins, coaching, and other support.
Help students learn coping skills, manage stress, regulate emotions, handle conflict, and build healthy relationships.
Support socio‑emotional and academic growth by co‑facilitating support groups and clubs.
Provide support in leading activities that align with students’ interests (sports, culinary arts, yoga, etc.).
Provide weekly lessons using a socio‑emotional curriculum.
Foster community and family engagement through supporting staff with family nights, SEL workshops, and community events.
Communicate regularly with Task Supervisor to support student success.
Help develop an Alumni Group through outreach.
Plan and implement service days, some on national holidays.
Complete related assignments to support the success of youth in the program.
