Primary Duties and Responsibilities The Speech Pathologist II assesses patients for speech related therapy needs due to cognitive, communicative and/or swallowing deficits. Establishes treatment goals, develops and implements appropriate Speech Pathology treatment program. This role reviews medical history, applies screening tests, and meets with patient to determine clinical needs, impairments, functional limitation and disabilities. Establishes a plan of care in collaboration with patient and family to include expected intensity, duration of therapy and makes recommendations for discharge. Provides education to patient, family, and/or caregiver regarding purpose of activity, use of equipment, home exercise, and activity. Performs regular re-examinations and seeks feedback from patient, family, and multidisciplinary medical team. Manages multiple patients at the same time. Provides services and required documentation timely, accurately, and in accordance with professional and regulatory standards. Participates in outside continuing education and incorporates information into practice. Performs other duties as assigned.

Additionally, the Speech Pathologist II assists with educating and orienting new staff, acts as clinical instructor for students and interns, and participates as instructor in an established class or program. Participates in educational events within the clinic and community. Attends specific clinical education coursework which meet the guidelines of the California Speech-Language Pathology Board and provides in-services to staff.

Qualifications

Education and Experience Holds a Master's degree or equivalent in speech-language pathology from an accredited educational institution. Eighteen months' experience as a Speech-Language Pathologist in an acute healthcare system environment. Experience with a range of diagnoses including general medicine, orthopedics, neurology, and cardiopulmonary. Completes mandatory stroke specific education requirements for certification. Previous experience with Microsoft Office and healthcare database systems preferred. Bilingual or multilingual preferred. Additionally, specific department qualifications are as follows:

Acute Rehabilitation Unit: Demonstrates competency in Inpatient Rehabilitation Facility Quality Reporting Program (IRF QRP). May require travel to patient's home for home evaluation.

License Required:

Current valid licensure as a Speech Pathologist in the State of California by the Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology and Hearing Aid Dispensers Board.

Certifications Required

Current American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
