Summary
The Tibor Rubin VA Medical Center in Long Beach is hiring one (1) Chaplain for a temporary appointment not to exceed 18 months. This role will provide comprehensive religious ministry services to Veterans at the facility.
Basic Requirements
United States Citizenship : Must be a U.S. citizen. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when qualified citizens are not available.
Education : Master of Divinity (MDiv) or equivalent graduate‑level theological degree from an accredited college/university or theological school recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) : Must have completed four units of accredited CPE from a recognized CPE center.
Ecclesiastical Endorsement : Must possess and maintain a full, active endorsement dated within the past 12 months from the official national endorsing authority of the applicant’s faith group or denomination. Endorsement must state the applicant is qualified to perform the full range of ministry required in the VA setting.
Board Certification : Must be a Board Certified Chaplain through the Board of Chaplaincy Certification Inc. (BCCI) or an equivalent nationally recognized certification body with reciprocity agreement with BCCI.
English Language Proficiency : Proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
Specialty Certification
(required for GS‑12): Demonstrated advanced practice or specialization beyond board certification, or qualification under the Grandfathering Provision for current VA employees.
Qualifications
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA): Ability to apply theories and methodologies to ministry specialty; integrate psychological and sociological theory; conduct primary research; develop outcome evaluations; mediate conflict; provide specialized consultation; teach and mentor; write policies and procedures.
Physical requirements as specified in VA Directive and Handbook 5019.
Responsibilities
Serve as a Chaplain providing comprehensive religious ministry services to Veteran patients according to their specific needs and desires.
Carry out ministries integrated into VHA’s Chaplain program and provide guidance to Chaplain Service management, other Chaplains, and stakeholders.
Possibly serve at a clinical facility, small healthcare system, satellite outpatient clinic, or community‑based outpatient clinic where onsite supervision is limited.
Provide extended and intensive pastoral counseling for patients facing complex ethical, moral, and spiritual issues.
Ensure program effectiveness and modify service patterns, including research and leadership of clinical teams.
Serve as a fully recognized member of an interdisciplinary treatment team (IDT) and collaborate with physicians, psychologists, nurses, therapists, and social workers.
Maintain effective rapport with IDT members and ensure equity of access and highest quality care.
Provide leadership, orientation, coaching, in‑service training, staff development, and continuing education programs.
Act as the primary Chaplain resource, spiritual advisor, and liaison for the spiritual needs of patients, caregivers, and staff.
Conduct comprehensive religious services and worship, pastoral ministry, and administration of Chaplain services.
Lead complex projects, task groups, and assignments to provide high‑level information to Chaplain Service management officials.
Work Schedule Sun‑Thu 07:30‑16:00 (may vary depending on service needs). Compressed/flexible schedule not available. Telework and virtual options are not available.
