Description
Under direct supervision, performs tasks related to the construction, maintenance, and repair of streets, bridges, medians, rights-of-way, gutters, curbs, sidewalks, alleys, drainage systems, and other public areas within the Town. This position may require irregular hours, including evenings, weekends, and participation in an on-call schedule for emergency repairs.
Examples of Duties • Clean, repair, and maintain roads, bridges, medians, rights-of-way, alleys, curbs, gutters, sidewalks, and other public areas. • Handle asphalt and concrete placement; load and unload trucks; lay pipelines. • Repair and patch manholes; perform street overlays; seal cracks in asphalt and concrete; remove and place concrete, including form setting and finishing; read grades and set grade stakes. • Assist in surveying, brush and tree cutting, mowing, and weed control; maintain clean street intersections, medians, and alleys. • Operate, repair, and maintain vehicles, light equipment, and tools including tractors, mowers, front-end and back-end loaders, trenchers, bucket trucks, augers, maintainers, jackhammers, saws, drills, bolt cutters, pothole patchers, rollers, dump trucks, and other equipment. • Work safely in close proximity to high-speed vehicle traffic, medians, and rights-of-way. • Identify and report potential hazards, liability exposures, problem areas, and inquiries from the public. • Conduct daily inspections and preventive maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools, including cleaning, safety checks, and servicing. • Adhere to Town and departmental safety rules and regulations. • Participate in standby/on-call schedule for emergency repairs at night, on weekends, and during inclement weather. • Assist other departments and perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications • High school diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). • Valid state issued driver's license; driving record must comply with Town policy. • Ability to obtain a valid Texas Class "A" Commercial Driver's License with proper endorsements, without restrictions, within six (6) months of hire.
Physical Abilities The physical abilities described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. * • Ability to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow oral and written directions. • Ability to perform routine and physically strenuous tasks on a repetitive basis. • Hand, foot, and eye coordination sufficient to operate light to heavy equipment. • Ability to lift and carry up to 100 lbs. of equipment multiple times per day, shovel, crawl, bend, kneel, climb on and off equipment, and operate vibrating equipment. • Ability to work indoors, outdoors, underground, in confined spaces, and in trenches; on level, slippery, sloping, unstable, and muddy terrain; and under noisy conditions. • Ability to work in adverse environmental conditions including rain, sleet, snow, heat, dust, sun exposure, and under hazardous conditions with traffic, insects, noxious plants, and snakes. * Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Desired Qualifications • Experience with street maintenance, including asphalt, concrete, repair, or construction. • Experience operating light to heavy construction equipment. • Experience with Geographic Information System (GIS) collection.
Knowledge/ Skills / Abilities • General knowledge of installation and maintenance of drainage structure and erosion control system. • Skills required to operate vehicles, small power tools, and equipment in a safe and appropriate manner. • Ability to exercise good judgment and make competent decisions. • Ability to handle multiple projects, meet deadlines, and work well under pressure and stress. • Ability to work extensive hours, as needed, and respond within 30 minutes to an on-call or emergency callback. • Ability to maintain an effective and professional working relationship with coworkers, supervisors, and the general public.
