The Labor Relations Division (LRD) is committed to enhancing the wellbeing of the workforce through education and enforcement of New Mexico labor laws. We provide quality investigative services and strive to deter discrimination and harassment, unsafe child labor, paid sick leave violations, and unfair wage practices for New Mexico workers.
This position can work out of either Albuquerque or Santa Fe offices.
Why does the job exist?
The Deputy Director is an essential supervisor role in the Labor Relations Division. Serving as continuity leadership for the division, the Deputy Director provides essential management and supervisory services to ensure smooth operations. The Deputy Director reports directly to the Director. The Deputy supervises the supervisors or managers who head the five Labor Relations units: Child Labor/Paid Sick Leave, Human Rights, Operations, Public Works, and Wage & Hour. This role ensures each unit is meeting base performance expectations, identifying and reaching achievable service provision goals, and removing inefficiencies or obstacles to high quality public service.
How does it get done?
The Deputy Director for the Labor Relations Division supports the Director with leadership-level agenda setting, legislative support for the Secretary, guiding strategic outreach and education efforts, internal fiscal management, identify and apply for external resource opportunities. The Deputy Director directly manages supervisors for the Child Labor, Human Rights, Operations, Paid Sick Leave, Public Works, and Wage & Hour units. During times of transition between Directors, the Deputy serves as the head of the Division.

The Deputy Director position supports management and staff for the Labor Relations Division. Through the leadership and supervisory contributions of the Deputy Director, New Mexican constituents are served with quality assessments and enforcement on claims relating to the employment of minors, fair pay and sick leave, and human rights.
Ideal Candidate
The ideal candidate requires a balance of technical proficiency with public programs and policy, operational logistics, and management. The Deputy Director needs to mentor and guide supervisors to ensure each unit of the Division is operating at peak effectiveness. The Deputy needs to be able to focus on details and the big picture of issues relating to Labor Relations services. The Deputy needs to be an excellent communicator in all mediums. A successful candidate will be someone who empowers management and staff, provides information and insight to the Director and Secretary when needed, ensures high quality service provision.
Minimum Qualification
Master's Degree in any field of study from an accredited college or university and ten (10) years of executive level experience with a heavy strategic/functional strategy impact directly related to the purpose of the position defined by the agency at the time of recruitment. Any combination of education from an accredited college or university and/or direct experience in this occupation totaling sixteen (16) years may substitute for the required education and experience. A hiring agency will designate a portion of the required experience to include executive management and/or specialized experience. Any required licensure, certification or registration shall be defined at the time of recruitment and will be in addition to the above requirements.
Employment Requirements
Must possess and maintain a valid New Mexico Driver's License. Must possess and maintain a current Defensive Driving Course Certificate from the State of New Mexico or must pass and receive Defensive Driving Course Certification within six (6) months of date of hire as a condition of continued employment.
Working Conditions
Work is performed in an office setting with exposure to Visual/Video Display Terminal (VDT) and extensive personal computer and phone usage. Employee may regularly sit, stand, walk, and lift up to 25 pounds. Due to use of office equipment such as computer, phone, and printer, repetitive hand movement is common. They will also experience periodic face-to-face interaction with clients and daily in-person communication with coworkers.
