Job Overview The Special Education Department Chair (DC) serves as the liaison between special education staff at the building level, school administration, and district administration. The DC supports instructional and compliance efforts to ensure students with disabilities receive all necessary supports as determined by the IEP team.

Special Education teachers plan and provide learning experiences for students with disabilities in a variety of educational settings. The teacher creates a flexible program, modifies the general education curriculum as needed, and establishes positive relationships with parents and other staff.

Job Requirements

A valid Alaska initial, professional, or master teaching certificate with an endorsement in special education.

Evidence of content knowledge: posted degree or minor in the content area of this position, passing Praxis Subject Assessments scores, or an endorsement in the content area.

Educators teaching Kindergarten through 3rd grade must meet the Alaska Reads Act requirements.

Experience working with special education students.

Experience collaborating to support the Individualized Education Plan (IEP) needs of special education students in a public school setting.

Philosophy of education that aligns with practice.

Understanding of student learning and developmental knowledge applied in practice.

Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior for an effective learning atmosphere.

Organizes class time for balanced instruction, demonstration, work time, and assessment.

Communicates clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects.

Provides individualized and small‑group instruction tailored to learner needs.

Utilizes current technology to enhance instruction and for record‑keeping.

Applies research and theory to instructional programs.

Facilitates, monitors, and assesses student learning; evaluates academic and social growth; prepares progress reports.

Identifies pupil needs and develops strategies for individual education plans.

Creates a learning environment that engages all students.

Works collaboratively with parents, families, and the community; communicates regularly through newsletters, notes, conferences, etc.

Contributes to the teaching profession through participation and professional development.

Facilitate, monitor, and assess student learning.

Evaluate academic and social growth; keep records and prepare progress reports.

Identify pupil needs, make referrals, and develop strategies for individual education plans.

Create and maintain a learning environment where all students are engaged and contributing.

Produce functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and exhibits of student work.

Supervise classroom environment, students, and volunteers.

Partner with parents, families, and the community.

Communicate regularly with parents via newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.

Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession.

Work Environment and Physical / Mental Demands Frequent standing, walking, sitting, speaking, and hearing are required. The employee must reach frequently, occasionally lift items up to 40 lb, and manage diverse cultural, personality, and work‑style situations under pressure.

Additional Job Information Employees must possess the ability to read and write in English and may be required to work at USDA facilities on military installations.
