This position requires a full-time in-person presence on campus or at alternative locations. Summary:

The Biology Technical Specialist provides support to the teaching labs for Human Biology and similar courses. Responsible for the general operation, preparation, and maintenance of designated Biology laboratory courses on the Arnold campus. Maintains supplies, equipment, and lab instrumentation; prepares reagents; maintains the physical environment of the labs; and ensures compliance with established safety practices and hazardous waste procedures. Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager. Responsibilities Prepare all materials and set up equipment and demonstrations for biology laboratory courses in the Health & Life Sciences building. Update preparation manuals as necessary. Responsible for the setup and take-down of assigned experiments according to established schedules and monitoring materials between lab sections. Maintain the routine maintenance of the biology laboratories. Maintain the laboratory equipment and perform minor repairs. Monitor and stock supplies in HLSB classrooms. Maintain an up-to-date inventory of lab equipment and place orders for replacement materials. Perform routine housekeeping of the laboratories. Keep labs in working order, clean, and well-stocked. Generate facility work requests as necessary. Be up to date and consistently follow established safety procedures for chemical and biological waste and electrical equipment. Follow and promote established safety policies and procedures by maintaining a safe work environment and adhering to procedures for the collection and storage of hazardous waste. Perform chemical and waste container checks. Test safety equipment and maintain records. Inform Laboratory Manager of problems or deficiencies. Provide assistance to faculty and students concerning laboratory equipment, demonstrations, and set-ups. Assemble materials for classroom and science outreach demonstrations. Conduct, monitor, and update inventories of equipment, supplies, and chemicals, and advise the Laboratory Manager of needs. Other duties as assigned by the Laboratory Manager, including running related errands, organizing and keeping records, assisting with room schedules, traveling to off-site campuses, participating in departmental cross-training activities, etc.

Qualifications Required Qualifications

Associate's degree or higher Minimum Of Six Months Of Relevant Experience Previous science laboratory-related work experience Proficient in the use of computers, iPads, and Microsoft Office Applications. Willingness and ability to work a 12-month flexible schedule, dependent on laboratory schedules and departmental needs. Reliable, detail-oriented, and capable of managing time to meet deadlines. Ability to work independently with minimal direct supervision. Ability to maintain confidentiality of testing materials. Ability to work effectively with a diverse group of people (students, faculty, staff, public, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor of Science in biology or related discipline. Experience with use and maintenance of biology laboratory equipment/instrumentation. Experience supporting post-secondary science laboratories. Ability to use basic tools to perform maintenance.
