Overview:
The Controller is accountable for managing all financial operations, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, corporate financials, and compliance with internal and external controls. This role also involves working closely with company leadership to ensure financial health, manage risks, and provide strategic guidance.
Experience: 5+ years of accounting experience, with at least 2 years in leadership role. Experience in the construction industry preferred.
Wage Range: Determined by experience
Roles and Responsibilities:
Accounts Payable (AP)
Review weekly check runs
Enter, code, and review invoices
Set up new vendors in QuickBooks
Collect and maintain vendor compliance documentation
Accounts Receivable (AR)
Review AR ledger to ensure all payments are posted correctly
Investigate delinquent accounts and resolve issues
Review all vouchers related to payments received
Corporate Financials
Oversee AP/AR transactions, payroll, general ledger reconciliations, and bank/credit card account management
Develop and maintain a comprehensive set of internal account controls
Ensure compliance with GAAP to control cash flow, mitigate risk, and maintain accurate financial reporting
Prepare the annual operating budget
Perform monthly variance and trend analysis
Collaborate with leadership to develop and track budgets and forecasts
Build investment strategies to maximize ROI
Evaluate large capital expenditures
Develop and monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) for financial performance
Maintain a fixed asset listing and calculate monthly depreciation of company assets
Manage the month-end close process, including adjustments to the general ledger and the calculation of depreciation
Hire and collaborate with third-party auditors and annual audits
Coordinate with tax advisors to ensure accurate and timely tax fillings
Project Financials
Review monthly project financial reports
Oversee the purchase and rental of necessary equipment for construction projects
External Relationships
Develop and maintain relationships with external business partners (banks, sureties, insurance providers, legal advisors, auditors)
Manage corporate insurance policies (general liability, workers' compensation, umbrella, auto, etc.)
Ensure corporate licenses and renewals are maintained (business, contractor, trade, etc.)
Qualifications and Skills:
Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field required. CPA or CMA certification preferred.
Proficiency in construction-specific accounting systems and advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
Familiarity with construction accounting practices, including job costing and WIP reports.
Strong ability to analyze complex financial data and provide actionable insights.
Proven ability to lead and manage an accounting team effectively.
Exceptional attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
