Job Description

Essential Functions Performs all work promptly and accurately. Collects blood from patients using venipuncture, arterial puncture, capillary puncture, or special techniques required for patients with vascular-access devices according to established laboratory procedures. Verifies patient identification prior to specimen collection to assure accurate testing. Responds promptly to any request for specimen collection and communicates effectively with patient care areas or staff if any delay occurs. Performs bedside glucose testing at specified times and adheres to all quality control standards established for this procedure before releasing results. Prepares specimens for processing by accurately identifying appropriate specimens, delivering them to the correct department, entering all required patient information, and verifying that the proper test has been ordered. Instructs and assists patients with proper specimen collection (e.g., clean catch urine, 24-hour urine, pediatric urine, chain of custody collection, sputum, etc.) when necessary. Keeps work organized to avoid confusion and potential errors. Responds promptly and communicates effectively with anyone requiring assistance or service from the lab. Provides information regarding proper specimen collection and handling for all laboratory testing. Assists with glassware washing and distribution within the laboratory as requested. Pennsylvania Department of Health . Maintains current knowledge of laboratory and hospital policies and procedures as well as performance standards for laboratory personnel. Demonstrates continual awareness of and compliance with safety, infection control, and quality assurance procedures. Advises supervisors of potential hazards when noted. Rotates, dates, and tests reagents as they are received or prepared to ensure accuracy, avoid expiration, and maintain availability. Assists with opening, verifying, and distributing laboratory supplies when necessary. Assists with the implementation of new procedures and/or evaluation of new products or equipment. Provides written evaluations or findings to supervisors promptly after testing. Suggests changes in methodologies, workflow, or techniques to improve accuracy and/or efficiency of service. Non-Essential Functions

Performs related and miscellaneous duties as assigned. Accepts additional assignments as delegated by laboratory supervisors. Voluntarily assists clerical and technical staff when workload fluctuates. Works weekends or holidays as required for laboratory coverage, as assigned by the supervisor. Participates in shift rotations as needed for laboratory coverage, assigned on the basis of seniority. Communicates effectively with co-workers, patients, medical staff, visitors, and other Medical Center personnel. Makes mature and sound judgments. Maintains a pleasant and professional demeanor when dealing with patients. License / Certification / Registration

Certified Phlebotomist with

ASCP ,

AMT ,

CLSI , or equivalent certification. Meets the

American Heart Association's standards

for Healthcare Provider

Basic Life Support (BLS)

and renews certification every two years. Education

High school graduate or equivalent. Graduate of a certified Phlebotomy program or equivalent training. Experience

Preference may be given to candidates with experience in a hospital laboratory as a phlebotomist. Shifts
