The Academic and Career Planning Center is seeking candidates to fill an academic advisor position to work with on-campus and online students in a variety of academic disciplines. The advisor also will be expected to lead a first-year seminar each fall semester.

Successful candidates will be able to demonstrate strong interpersonal, writing, and public speaking skills. They will also demonstrate a history of identifying and solving problems within an organization. College students come to USD with talents, abilities, and skills that should be viewed as assets for their individual and collective success. The advisor will have demonstrated understanding of the unique needs of students from a wide variety of social and cultural backgrounds.

The advisor will be responsible for 100-150 students. At USD, advisors help students create both short-term schedules for each semester and long-term plans for graduation. Advisors are responsible for knowing the academic requirements, policies, and procedures in the academic catalog and to communicate them effectively to students. Advisors also work closely with faculty, staff, and administrators to insure the inclusion and success of each student.

A Master's degree is required, but that should not deter those who are working on a graduate degree and/or feel particularly drawn to this position from applying. Experience in higher education, teaching, and/or counseling is a plus. Familiarity with student information systems and Microsoft Office programs is desired.
