Description
Performs semi-skilled work in a variety of trades to include carpentry, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing; work is done in the construction, maintenance, and repair of County buildings, facilities and utilities. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to; performing roofing and structural inspections and repairs. Work is performed under general supervision.
Minimum Qualifications
Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school, supplemented by vocational course work, and 2-4 years experience doing increasingly skilled trades work in one or more areas.
Must possess a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
General knowledge of the common terminology, tools, and practices of the carpentry, plumbing and electrical trades.
General knowledge of OSHA standards, occupational hazards, safety precautions and procedures common to the skilled trades.
General knowledge of the use and characteristics of common building materials.
Semi-skilled in performing electrical, plumbing, and mechanical work.
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and other drawings.
Ability to plan projects and to estimate time and materials required.
Basic use and knowledge of networked computers and common applications such as e-mail, Microsoft Office and asset management software.
General knowledge of computer graphic software and other related computer aided design software preferred.
Supplemental Information
Performs a variety of preventive maintenance tasks involved in the inspection and maintenance of HVAC, electrical and plumbing systems, as well as facility structural aspects such as roofs, doors etc.
Assists the County Sign Technician in the design, production, repair, and installation of street and facility signage for County and school system facilities on an as needed basis.
Performs other related work as required.
Physical Demands
Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including mechanics' tools, carpenters' tools, electrical tools, plumbing tools, etc. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be able to lift and move equipment weighing between 50-100 pounds. Routinely climbs stairs and ladders. Crawling must be done when working in attic spaces. There is a great deal of bending, stooping, standing, and walking.
