The Youth Advocate position at SQPA's Community Schools program is an exciting opportunity for an individual passionate about empowering young learners. The ideal candidate will be dedicated to fostering strong communication skills, boosting self-esteem, and promoting academic success for middle school students.

In this role, the Youth Advocate will provide mentoring and instructional support in ELA, Mathematics, and STEM subjects to middle school scholars throughout the academic year.

Qualifications:

Prior experience mentoring youth Experience with tracking attendance and supporting student engagement Strong communication and organizational skills A commitment to fostering a safe, welcoming, and supportive school environment Minimum Education: High school diploma or GED Preferred Education: Associate's degree or equivalent Experience: 1-3 Years Primary Job Duties:

Provide 5-6 hours of daily classroom instruction in ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science to middle school students, while also partnering with chronically absent students to identify and address barriers to regular attendance as part of the Success Mentor program Collaborate closely with teachers to develop individualized tutorial content Assess student progress regularly and provide feedback to support academic growth Foster authentic relationships with students and families through regular communication, including weekly phone calls and updates, while encouraging active participation in school events and meetings Collaborate with the Community Schools Director to develop ongoing opportunities for student and family engagement and enhance communication Lead Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons to support students personal and social development Assist with daily school operations, including monitoring hallways and stairwells, supervising lunch periods, supporting various activities and events, and accompanying students on educational trips Complete lesson plans, weekly reports, and other required documentation in a timely manner Attend meetings, staff development sessions, and other professional learning opportunities COMPENSATION

Part-time in-person role that will be paid $25 per hour Mon-Friday, 8am-2pm

Established in 1976, Southern Queens Park Association's mission is to coordinate and provide comprehensive programs for children, youth, adults, families, and seniors residing in Southern Queens. SQPA finds innovative ways to combine its stewardship of the 54-acre Southern Queens-Roy Wilkins Park with its mission to enhance the quality of life of residents in Southern Queens.

SQPA has strategically located service sites throughout Southern Queens and was constituted to actively combat the social issues that challenge or impact the quality of life in the geographic area in and around Jamaica, Queens. SQPA is not a part of the New York City Department of Parks & Recreation but is an anchor institution that serves as an intermediary, facilitator, organizer, advocate, provider, and sanctuary.
