LHH is seeking a Payroll Tax Manager/Sr. Manager for a great firm in Metro Atlanta, GA. The role is a strategic, detail-oriented leader responsible for payroll tax operations. This role oversees a small team, ensures compliance with all federal, state, and local tax agencies, leads the W2/W2C process, manages tax agency notices, reconciles taxes quarterly, and handles multi-state payroll complexities. The position is critical for maintaining accurate, timely, and compliant payroll operations while driving process improvements.
Responsibilities
Establish and maintain strong operational controls and risk mitigation for payroll compliance.
Deep understanding of federal, state, and local wage/tax regulations.
Lead and coach the team, fostering a stimulating work environment.
Reconcile quarterly/annual tax returns (941s, 940s, state/local returns).
Ensure timely and accurate tax filings; identify and amend errors before submission.
Expert in W2/W2C calculations, scenarios, and filing requirements.
Address and resolve agency notices.
Oversee multi-jurisdictional tax reporting and business traveler compliance.
File monthly/quarterly tax/statistics reports as needed.
Assist with IRS and state audits.
Manage relationships with third-party payroll providers, tax agencies, and auditors.
Communicate complex payroll matters to senior leadership.
Drive process improvements, automation, and best practices.
Handle confidential information professionally.
Strong analytical, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
Experience in matrix organizations and managing complex reporting relationships.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or similar.
Minimum 5 years of payroll tax experience with automated systems.
Experience in large, high-volume, multi-state payroll environments (including reciprocal tax laws).
Strong knowledge of current tax laws.
Proficiency in Excel (other analytics tools a plus).
Candidates may be considered at Manager or Senior Manager level, based on experience.
