Position Summary University Information Services (UIS) provides technical services and enterprise applications to the University of Colorado campuses and the Office of the President. The Principal Data Warehouse Engineer will support the university’s rapidly growing needs for data-driven decision making by developing, maintaining, and enhancing a comprehensive enterprise data warehouse, data integrations, analytics, and BI initiatives. This role is a key member of UIS’s ETL team, serving as a domain expert who applies industry-standard processes and technologies.

Description Of Job Duties and Responsibilities

Design and develop data engineering solutions, including requirement gathering, ETL development, system testing, deployments, documentation, and production support for CU data sources such as PeopleSoft Student, HCM, Finance, InfoEd, and Advancement.

Collaborate with business stakeholders to gather requirements and support UAT for data and BI initiatives.

Develop and maintain data warehouse marts and enhancements to existing reports.

Perform detailed data profiling and analysis for data modeling and design.

Create conceptual, logical, and physical data models for medium‑complexity work.

Maintain source‑to‑target mappings across multiple university domains.

Use IBM DataStage, SAS, shell scripting, and Perl to implement and refine ETL processes.

Lead and mentor ETL developers, allocating responsibilities and providing guidance throughout the SDLC.

Plan and execute system integration test cases to ensure solution integrity.

Deploy code through SDLC environments, coordinating with production services for job scheduling.

Investigate and resolve data, process, logic, or scheduling issues.

Lead technology projects, managing timelines, estimates, and communications.

Advise on data strategies, platforms, and application infrastructure.

Contribute to a multi‑year data warehouse roadmap aligning short‑ and long‑term objectives.

Participate in team meetings, code reviews, and peer design sessions.

Administer ETL tools and Linux environment configurations.

Provide architecture recommendations for BI enhancements, including Cognos framework changes.

Engage in continuous learning through trainings, conferences, and self‑directed study.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution or equivalent professional experience (education substituted on a year‑for‑year basis).

Four (4) years of experience in data warehouse or related domains.

Experience with IBM DataStage or equivalent ETL tools.

Proficiency in data modeling, database design, or data warehouse/mart design.

Knowledge of Kimball methodologies, star schema design, and snapshot techniques.

SQL expertise, including Oracle analytic functions and large‑volume query tuning.

Administering ETL or middleware tools (DataStage, ODI, Informatica, OSB, etc.).

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s or post‑baccalaureate degree in computer science, engineering, information systems, or related field.

Six (6) years of relevant experience, including IBM DataStage, Kimball star schema design, and SQL optimization.

Experience with SDLC standard processes for data warehousing.

Proficiency in Linux environments and shell scripting (Perl/Korn).

Technical lead experience managing a development team for sophisticated data solutions.

Experience in a university or higher‑education setting.

Java and PL/SQL programming skills.

PeopleSoft data model knowledge (Campus Solutions, Finance, HCM).

Experience implementing ETL or information management tools.
