Position Overview We are seeking a qualified Metals Inspector to join our growing engineering consulting team. This position involves performing field and shop inspections of structural steel, welding, bolting, and related components to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, and project specifications. The ideal candidate will hold relevant certifications and possess a strong attention to detail, technical knowledge, and a collaborative mindset.
Minimum Job Qualifications
3-5 years of relevant experience performing structural steel, bolting, and welding inspections in a field or shop environment.
Current Certified Welding Inspector (CWI) and/or ICC Structural Steel and Bolting/Welding Special Inspector certification.
The ability to obtain required security clearances for work on military installations, airports, nuclear sites, and power plants.
Familiarity with non-destructive testing (NDT) methods such as Magnetic Particle (MT), Dye Penetrant (PT), and Ultrasonic Testing (UT) preferred.
Preferred Technical Qualifications
ASNT Level II certification in MT, PT, and/or UT.
ICC Structural Steel and Bolting and Structural Steel and Welding certifications.
Experience in reinforcing steel and post-tensioned concrete inspection.
Articulating lift operator certification.
Key Responsibilities Leadership and Management
Serve as a field representative of the firm, upholding the highest standards of safety, professionalism, and client service.
Mentor and assist junior technicians or inspectors on projects as needed.
Demonstrate initiative by identifying project challenges or discrepancies and proactively working with project managers or engineers to resolve them.
Participate in internal training sessions and contribute to the continuous improvement of field operations and reporting practices.
Project Management
Coordinate daily inspection activities on assigned projects to ensure work is completed on schedule and in compliance with project specifications.
Proctor and observe welder qualification tests, ensuring documentation is properly completed.
Prepare accurate, timely, and detailed inspection and test reports for submittal to clients, contractors, and project managers.
Assist with additional inspection services as needed to support overall project needs, including:
Floor flatness/levelness measurements.
Locating reinforcing steel using pacometers (R-meters) and concrete imaging radar.
Concrete placement observations and miscellaneous field testing.
Technical Expertise
Perform inspections of structural steel bolting and welding in accordance with applicable codes and standards, such as AWS D1.1, D1.3, AISC Manual of Steel Construction, and others.
Conduct inspections of various welding applications, including structural steel, thin-walled piping, stainless steel, and carbon steel.
Maintain working knowledge of additional welding and fabrication codes, such as ASME and API.
Utilize proper tools and instruments to perform accurate measurements and inspections in the field and shop environments.
Possess essential math and measurement skills, including:
Calculating area, volume, torque values, and tensile strength.
Performing unit conversions (imperial/metric) and fraction-to-decimal conversions.
Reading and interpreting rulers and measurement devices.
