Estimator — Site Development & Heavy Civil Construction At
Petticoat-Schmitt Civil Contractors, Inc. , we don’t just build infrastructure — we build life-changing infrastructure. As a privately owned civil contracting firm, we perform work across the public and private markets, specializing in clearing, grading, underground utilities, roadway, and water/wastewater plant construction throughout the Southeast.
We’re seeking an experienced
Estimator
to join our Jacksonville team. This role is ideal for an analytical, detail‑driven professional who thrives on precision, collaboration, and continuous improvement. You’ll play a key part in preparing accurate, strategic bids that shape the success of major site development and heavy civil projects.
What You’ll Do Estimating & Bidding
Prepare detailed, accurate estimates with clearly defined cost, risk, and pricing.
Participate in all aspects of estimating, including pre‑construction activities and bid production.
Identify quality bidding opportunities (QBOs) and set priorities through RFP analysis and market research.
Review drawings, documents, and specifications to determine project scope and production rates.
Attend pre‑bid meetings and site visits as required.
Cost Analysis & Takeoffs
Prepare quantity takeoffs and solicit vendor and subcontractor pricing.
Define anticipated project durations and incorporate geotechnical data into estimates.
Identify labor, equipment, materials, and general conditions requirements.
Conduct value‑engineering exercises when appropriate.
Collaboration & Documentation
Present estimates for final review, including project approach narratives.
Coordinate with project managers, superintendents, and owners regarding construction methods, productivity, and change orders.
Work with administrative staff to ensure complete and accurate documentation.
Mentor and support junior estimating staff, including Agtek operators.
Continuous Improvement
Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of industry standards, bid requirements, and best practices.
Analyze cost history and incorporate lessons learned into future bids.
Update software rates and processes in coordination with operations teams.
Represent Petticoat‑Schmitt with professionalism and integrity in all client and vendor interactions.
What We’re Looking For Experience & Education
Minimum 3 years of estimating experience in civil construction (site development, utilities, roadway).
Proven experience in public and private bid production with strong understanding of cost drivers and risk.
Advanced knowledge of civil construction principles, procedures, and methods.
Strong math and analytical skills for quantity calculations and cost modeling.
Ability to read and interpret civil designs, bid documents, and geotechnical data.
Familiarity with FDOT or regional bidding practices.
Technical Skills
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Teams, Project, OneNote).
Experience with estimating and project software such as HCSS, Bid2Win, Bluebeam, PlanSwift, Primavera P6, or Procore.
Strong communication, organization, and time‑management skills.
Ability to mentor, train, and support team development.
