Northrop Grumman – Tooling Engineer - Energetics Manufacturing Level 2 or 3 Location:

Elkton, Maryland

The Northrop Grumman Propulsion Systems and Controls (PS&C) facility in Elkton, Maryland began solid-propellant rocket operations in 1948. Today, the Elkton PS&C facility designs, develops, and produces solid-propellant propulsion and ordnance systems in programs professionally managed for a wide variety of government and commercial customers. The facility also serves as the hub for offsite engineering and test facilities in Ronkonkoma, NY and Palm Beach Gardens, FL.

Job Summary Engineering and design of a wide range of production tooling components for energetic aerospace propulsion systems, including molds, lifting devices, handling fixtures, test fixtures, etc. and preparing input for documentation.

Coordinates and develops tooling requirements with project engineering, process engineering, manufacturing, quality, etc.

Responsible for coordinating tooling fabrication with machine shop and/or vendors, establishing scope and monitoring projects against planned scope.

Responsible for tool use, check‑out, and follow up in production.

Prepare estimates of tooling design and fabrication costs for proposals.

Identifies opportunities for improvements to existing designs.

Level of hire is dependent upon demonstrated skills, experience, education, and competency.

Basic Qualifications for Level 2

Must have a bachelor’s degree in STEM plus at least 2 years of experience, preferably in design. Will consider those with a master’s degree in STEM and 0 years of experience.

Ability to acquire a Secret Clearance, U.S. Citizenship as a pre‑requisite.

Must have good communication, problem‑solving skills, and demonstrated performance in a team environment.

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree.

Familiar with machine‑shop fabrication practices and material selection.

Working knowledge of basic stress calculations for support structures.

Experience working within a product team structure, managing events and timelines.

Composites and rubber molding background is a plus.

Working knowledge of geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (ASME Y14.5M).

Proficient with using Excel, PowerPoint, Word, CAD, and modeling tools.

Basic Qualifications for Level 3

Must have a bachelor’s degree in STEM plus at least 5 years of experience, preferably in design. Will consider those with a master’s degree in STEM and 3 years of experience.

Ability to acquire a Secret Clearance, U.S. Citizenship as a pre‑requisite.

Must have good communication, problem‑solving skills, and demonstrated performance in a team environment.

Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related degree.

Familiar with machine‑shop fabrication practices and material selection.

Working knowledge of basic stress calculations for support structures.

Experience working within a product team structure, managing events and timelines.

Preferred Requirements for Both Levels

Familiarity with Siemens NX and TcUA.

Prior manufacturing experience is a plus.

Active Secret Clearance.

Position Information This position falls under a Federal Explosives License issued by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) for this location. Candidates hired into this role will be required to complete and submit an Employee Possessor Questionnaire to ATF for approval to be a possessor.

Salary Primary Level Salary Range: $85,400.00 – $128,000.00. Secondary Level Salary Range: $105,400.00 – $158,000.00. The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate’s experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
