Overview Provide engineering and technical expertise and supervision to Transmission Substation engineering and design teams for the purpose of delivering safe, cost‑effective, and quality engineering and design services. This role includes both direct billable client work (project work) and project management support for projects. The incumbent is expected to lead discipline‑specific work, perform charge engineering duties, and manage project schedules and budgets. The incumbent will also support proposal development, project cost estimating, and business development efforts.

Responsibilities

Identify, analyze, and resolve engineering, technical, and design problems.

Plan, organize, estimate, schedule, and monitor work activities.

Produce thorough, timely, and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations, and sketches.

Continuously improve engineering knowledge, skills, and processes.

Communicate effectively in oral and written form.

Create substation civil‑structural drawing packages (foundations, structural steel, bus and cable) following national codes, industry standards, and best practices.

Represent the company positively and professionally, championing company goals.

Interact with customer internal engineers and technical personnel on a day‑to‑day basis.

Develop and maintain professional relationships with customers.

Monitor deliverables, schedules, and present solutions to the client.

Perform other duties as assigned by management.

Complexity of Work

Complex; established procedures not available. Major decision making.

Influences decisions of moderate nature requiring high degree of tact.

No direct reports, but mentors and provides leadership to junior engineers and those engineers outside the discipline.

Qualifications

4‑year bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering, or equivalent.

ABET accredited engineering degree.

5–7 years of engineering experience in the electrical industry, focusing on power delivery.

Professional Engineering (PE) license required.

Strong written and oral communication skills.

Ability to apply mathematical concepts and perform spreadsheet calculations.

Ability to interpret technical instructions and deal with abstract and concrete variables.

Self‑motivated, works independently or with limited supervision, and is a productive member of a team.

Experience with civil‑structural design of substations, foundation and structure designs, transformer oil containment systems, and structural analysis.

Experience in a field or construction environment implementing or verifying engineering drawings.

Experience in the electric utility industry.

Desired Skills

Interpret written specifications and implement them on engineering drawings.

Create civil‑structural project scopes, estimates, budgets, and schedules for substation projects.

Perform calculations for various foundation types including drilled piers, spread footers, and transformer pads.

Design and procure transformer oil containment systems.

Analyze existing steel or wood structures using modeling software.

Oversee junior staff and mentor designers/drafters.

Collaborate with senior civil engineers to establish best practices and quality assurance.

Communicate effectively with design disciplines, contractors, consultants, and clients.

Provide general project management capabilities and support proposal preparation.

Support design needs for permitting activities and manage budgets and schedules.

Physical Demands

Talk/Hear 2/3 of time; Use hands to feel, handle or finger tools 1/3–2/3 of time.

Lift up to 10 lbs 1/3 of time; up to 25 lbs 1/3 of time; up to 50 lbs none.

Visual requirements: peripheral vision while holding gaze to a point.

Work Environment

Wet, humid conditions (non‑weather); Outdoor weather conditions few days a year; Extreme cold and heat occasional.

Electrical shock risk 1/3 of time; no moving mechanical parts or explosives.

Noise level moderate.
