Temporary Help‑Veterinarian (Dallas Animal Services [DAS Dept.], Non‑Civil Service)
Job Summary: Provides medical care to a variety of domestic or exotic animals to maintain and improve the health of the animals.
Essential Functions
Provides clinical and preventive care for domestic or exotic animals; performs examinations, identifies diagnosis, and determines treatment.
Interacts, engages, and communicates with staff regarding health, feeding, husbandry, nutrition, breeding, diseases, and injuries to keep all parties informed of the status of animals.
Coordinates the administration of various aspects of animal care to effectively care for animals and control animal‑related human health problems.
Consults and collaborates with medical, dental, veterinary professionals to facilitate specialty animal care services and state and county health agencies regarding public health issues.
Coordinates the planning of the daily activities of the veterinary function to ensure efficient and effective operation.
Orders, issues, and administers drugs and medical supplies in compliance with federal, state, and local requirements.
Assists, supports, and helps manager in the development and implementation of policies that impact animal and indirectly human health.
Oversees the sale of shelter animals to research institutions for compliance with city ordinance and policy directives.
Performs any and all other work as needed or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine from an AVMA accredited college.
Active Veterinary license from the State of Texas; must obtain license within the probationary period.
Valid DEA registration certificate within the probationary period.
Current valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Spay/neuter skills.
Basic understanding of shelter medicine.
Effective oral/written communication skills.
Basic computer skills.
No felony drug offenses.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Thorough knowledge of techniques and procedures required in veterinary medical care of domestic or exotic animals.
Knowledge of husbandry, nutrition, disease, diagnostics, heartworm disease, and pharmaceuticals.
Knowledge of local, state, and federal laws as applied to shelter medicine.
Ability to diagnose and recognize illness, injury, and disease in animals.
Ability to handle and humanely manage various domestic or exotic animals in different health stages.
Ability to prepare and maintain a variety of health records and reports.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
Ability to supervise the work of others.
