Duties and Responsibilities
Works under the direction and supervision of the Preservation Librarian to perform a variety of tasks related to the preservation of library's materials. Manages monograph commercial binding and shelf preparation program. Manages and executes library conservation treatment program for paper-based circulating materials. Under consultation with the preservation librarian, provides treatment for non-circulating bound items. Operates and coordinates the reformatting program following nationally established preservation standards. Communicates and coordinates the workflow with vendors or parties who execute the reformatting process. Manages and performs a series of routine tasks prior and subsequent to the reformatting process, including supervising student assistants on the projects. Assists the preservation librarian in planning, budgeting, and contracting the reformatting projects. Participates in exploring new and emerging reformatting options and transitioning to new programs and protocols. Examples include, but are not limited to, exploring and transitioning microfilming newspaper projects to digital format. Creates book and flat-paper supports for library exhibitions. Digitizes projects by designing and constructing carriers or cradles, and advising on objects' condition and their handling throughout the projects. Maintains supplies and equipment for the book conservation, reformatting, and shared areas in the department. Hires, trains, and supervises student assistants. Participates as a standing team member for the Library Collection Disaster Team representing the preservation section for disaster preparedness. Responds to collection emergencies and executes collection care-related special projects. Examples include, but are not limited to, mold outbreaks, water leaks, and moving collections. Collaborates with library staff to explore and establish preservation initiatives for non-paper based library materials, including films, tapes, and discs. Conducts preservation assessment and surveys. Participates in conservation and preservation outreach activities for the University of Hawaii at Manoa community and beyond. Collects statistics, produces a monthly activities report, and compiles data for departmental annual report in a timely fashion. Other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Possession of a baccalaureate degree in the Humanities or Sciences, and three (3) years of progressively responsible professional experience with collection care and/or conservation for bound paper-based materials; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices and techniques in the field of preservation and conservation, as demonstrated by broad knowledge of a full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles, and methodologies. Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations and theories and systems. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative, and timely manner. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally, and by preparation of reports and other materials. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals. Demonstrated ability to use various software applications, including word-processing and spreadsheet programs For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations. Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated. Must be able to see and discern color. Able to work in dirty, dusty, and/or damp conditions. Demonstrated exceptional manual dexterity. Demonstrated ability and willingness to learn and take new challenges.
