Position Title
Senior Vegetation Management Inspector (SVMI) – ISA – Grass Valley, CA
Description The Senior Vegetation Management Inspector (SVMI) is a seasoned forestry professional responsible for inspections, audits, and monitoring contractor performance in support of the Utilities Corp. Program. Candidates must hold an educational background in forestry, horticulture, arboriculture, environmental studies, conservation, or related disciplines, and have practical experience in vegetation management or related forestry work. The SVMI works closely with tree crews, contractors, and utility representatives to ensure public safety, regulatory compliance, and operational efficiency. The role is safety‑sensitive and requires strong leadership, communication, and data‑management skills.
Duties & Responsibilities
Resolve obstacles to complete work safely, cost‑effectively, and on time, managing time and expenses in the field.
Oversee day‑to‑day operations, ensuring personnel stay focused and scope is achieved with proper equipment and documentation.
Act as the Vegetation Management contact for new business and re‑construction work requested by the Energy Delivery organization.
With PG&E representative approval, approve scheduling and scope changes in the field.
Promote public, contractor, and employee safety at all times by enforcing a positive safety culture and completing Safety Observations and Good Catches.
Audit work performed by other VM inspectors for compliance with applicable standards.
Assist with training and onboarding of VM inspectors and support the PGE Work Verification team.
Maintain working relationships with public agencies, PG&E tree contractors, and the PG&E representative.
Basic Responsibilities
Patrol transmission circuits and prescribe work to tree contractors, ensuring clearances meet one‑year compliance.
Determine necessary trimming or removal by assessing tree hazard likelihood.
Prescribe tree pruning and removal to meet PG&E Vegetation Management Standards and procedural requirements.
Maintain compliance with all permitting and safety requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
Utilize computers to run reports and update PG&E VMDSRs.
Perform quality‑check audits of assigned VM inspectors, focusing on field compliance and data integrity.
Assist in outage investigations, emergency response, fire and incident investigations, and customer claim investigations as required.
Ensure all line sections are patrolled per the annual plan and documented correctly under PG&E mapping procedures.
Identify and notify PG&E of newly identified idle and private lines.
Equipment, Environmental and Safety Requirements
Drive cars, trucks, or forklifts as required.
Navigate uneven ground, exposure to noise, temperature extremes, and wet conditions.
Operate foot controls or repetitive foot movements.
Handle dust, gas, fumes, chemicals safely.
Spend prolonged periods sitting or in training sessions.
Use forestry‑related equipment such as clinometers, range finders, logger’s tape, DBH tape, and safety gear (hard hat, vest, glasses).
Qualifications Must meet the general requirement below:
High School diploma or GED.
Class C driver’s license.
Active ISA Arborist certification required.
Meet one of the following experience levels:
5+ years as a tree crew climber/foreman with at least 2 years of line‑clearance certification.
5+ years as a Vegetation Management Inspector and Certified Arborist.
5+ years as a Registered Professional Forester.
5+ years as a Utility Inspector (or higher) with at least 1 year of vegetation management experience.
4 years of honorable military service + 1 additional year of vegetation management inspection experience, subject to PG&E approval.
Candidate must reside within 50 miles of Grass Valley, CA.
All hires are subject to approval by PG&E representative.
Required Skills
Identify local trees and understand growth rates.
High level of communication and organization.
Excellent customer service skills.
Experience with data‑collection devices and GIS software preferred.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to learn job‑specific software.
Adaptability, problem solving, and independent work ability.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Ability to work in rugged terrain and inclement weather, including nights and weekends.
Training
OSHA 30‑hour construction safety overview (within 6 months of start date).
Certified Tree Safety Professional (CTSP) or Certified Arborist (CA) with TRAQ certificate (within 6 months of test eligibility).
911 standby training (within 1 month of start date).
Working knowledge of QA/QC (within 1 month of start date).
Computer training for forms, document uploads, and GIS (within 1 month of start date).
