We are currently seeking a Optical and Routing Engineer to join our team in Rancho Cordova, California.
Position Summary NTT DATA is seeking a seasoned Optical and Routing Engineer to support our Public Sector SLED (State, Local, and Education) clients. This role requires deep technical expertise in optical networking, routed infrastructure, and fiber delivery, combined with strong program management and network engineering capabilities within complex IT environments.
Key Responsibilities
Architect, implement, and maintain MPLS and DWDM networks for high‑capacity, mission‑critical environments.
Lead fiber delivery projects, including design, vendor coordination, installation oversight, and testing.
Manage large‑scale network engineering programs, ensuring alignment with client goals, timelines, and compliance standards.
Configure and troubleshoot Cisco routed and optical platforms, including IOS‑XR, NCS, ASR, and ONS platforms.
Develop and maintain network documentation, including topology diagrams, runbooks, and change management records.
Collaborate with stakeholders across engineering, operations, and procurement to ensure seamless delivery.
Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers and project teams.
Support network automation and orchestration initiatives using modern tools and frameworks.
Travel to the client site in Sacramento, CA may be required on an as‑requested basis.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor of Science (BS) in Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field.
Minimum 10 years of experience with:
Multi‑Protocol Label Switching (MPLS)
Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (DWDM)
Cisco routed and optical network infrastructure
Preferred Skills
Proven experience in fiber delivery, including design, implementation, and troubleshooting.
Strong background in IT network engineering, including Layer 2/3 protocols, BGP, OSPF, QoS, and multicast.
Experience managing network programs in public sector or enterprise environments.
Expertise in program and project management methodologies (Agile, PMP, ITIL).
Experience with network monitoring and performance tools (SolarWinds, NetScout, Cisco Prime).
Familiarity with SDN/NFV, network automation, and orchestration platforms (Ansible, Python, REST APIs).
Knowledge of fiber optic testing tools (OTDR, power meters, light sources).
Ability to lead cross‑functional teams and manage vendor relationships.
Strong analytical, documentation, and communication skills.
Preferred Certifications & Training
Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) – Service Provider (preferred)
Cisco Certified Network Professional (CCNP) – Service Provider or Enterprise
Certified Fiber Optic Technician (CFOT) or equivalent
Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified ScrumMaster (CSM)
CompTIA Network+, Security+, or Linux+
Juniper Networks Certified Internet Expert (JNCIE‑SP) (optional but valuable)
ITIL Foundation Certification
Training in optical network design, fiber splicing, and OTDR testing
Work Environment & Travel Hybrid or on‑site work depending on client requirements. Occasional travel to client sites for installation, testing, or project coordination.

The starting pay range for this role is $127,792 to $212,988. Actual compensation will depend on a number of factors, including the candidate’s relevant experience, technical skills, and other qualifications. The candidate may also be eligible for incentive compensation based on personal and/or company performance.
