The Dean of Students at WLA plays a critical role in maintaining a positive, disciplined, and safe school climate. This position oversees student behavior management, supports academic and social-emotional development, and collaborates closely with staff, families, and leadership to ensure that students meet their full potential. The Dean ensures consistent implementation of school policies and practices, fosters a culture of accountability, and models WLA’s core values in all interactions.

Mindsets at WLA:

We recognize that the work WLA is undertaking is challenging, but we are tenacious in pursuit of our mission to prepare our kids to thrive in the world and change it for the better.

We prepare ALL students for both four-year college and computer science-related careers, including those with special education needs, significant behavioral needs, and varied backgrounds.

We commit to restorative discipline practices, even when it is hard, because we know they are best for our students.

We deeply believe in the inherent power of young people and view school as a place where students are encouraged to grow and nurture that leadership and power.

We ensure students are deserving of warmth and respect from adults at all times.

We accept responsibility to support all students’ growth, understanding that students are still developing and require guidance that meets them where they are.

We see learning as a collaboration between students and teachers, all of whom bring passion, experiences, and curiosity to the classroom.

We hold that grades reflect mastery rather than compliance, and are the shared responsibility of both teacher (for engaging students) and student (for taking advantage of learning opportunities).

We place equity, inclusion, and empowerment at the center of our work, specifically around race, gender identity/sexual orientation, and socio-economic status.

Key Responsibilities:

Oversee school-wide student behavior management systems, including referrals, Tier 1 and Tier 2 interventions, and restorative practices.

Monitor, review, and respond to student behavior issues, ensuring equitable and consistent application of school policies.

Collaborate with teachers to support classroom management and pre-referral interventions.

Lead investigations related to behavioral concerns, ensuring compliance with district and legal guidelines.

Student Support & Culture

Serve as a mentor and advocate for students, supporting their social-emotional growth and leadership development.

Implement initiatives and incentives that promote positive school culture, attendance, and engagement.

Support students in understanding expectations and self-advocacy strategies.

Work alongside academy deans, teachers, and leadership to create and maintain a safe, orderly, and nurturing environment.

Provide guidance and coaching to teachers regarding classroom management, student engagement, and behavior strategies.

Participate in professional development planning and staff culture initiatives.

Family & Community Engagement

Communicate effectively with families regarding student behavior, progress, and support plans.

Foster strong relationships with parents, guardians, and community partners to support student success.

Qualifications:

Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in school administration, student affairs, or related roles.

Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, and families in a high-expectation environment.
