Software Engineer II – Embedded Controls (Microcontrollers / Vehicle Systems) Location:

Hartford, WI

Type:

Full-time | Onsite collaboration required

Join a hands-on engineering team developing

embedded control systems for large on- and off-road vehicles

used in

construction, emergency response, and defense

applications. This position focuses on

microcontroller-based embedded software

that drives the intelligence of complex vehicle systems — controlling hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical subsystems in harsh environments.

We’re looking for a

software engineer who thrives at the intersection of hardware and firmware , can interpret system requirements into efficient, testable C code, and enjoys seeing their work come to life on real machines.

What You’ll Do

Develop and maintain embedded software

for vehicle control modules (e.g., body controllers, HMI, I/O, or power distribution modules).

Translate system and hardware requirements

into reliable software design, integrating sensors, actuators, and communication buses.

Implement, debug, and test firmware

on target microcontrollers using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, and debuggers.

Collaborate closely with electrical and systems engineers

on new hardware bring-up, I/O validation, and board support packages.

Support vehicle-level testing , including CAN-based communication, diagnostic routines, and functional validation on prototype builds.

Participate in peer code reviews, configuration control, and continuous integration

to maintain software quality and traceability.

Analyze field or production issues , perform root-cause analysis, and implement corrective actions.

Document software design artifacts , including requirements, design notes, test plans, and release records per company and industry standards.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree

in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, or a related field.

2–5 years of experience

developing embedded software in C for microcontroller-based systems.

Understanding of

real-time embedded design , including interrupt-driven code, timers, PWM, ADCs, and state machines.

Ability to

read electrical schematics , interpret datasheets, and collaborate with hardware engineers.

Familiar with

CAN/J1939 , LIN, or similar communication protocols.

Hands-on experience with

lab tools

(oscilloscope, multimeter, power supply, logic analyzer).

Familiarity with

version control

(Git) and

issue-tracking systems .

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; able to debug both software and hardware interaction issues.

Qualifications

Experience with

FreeRTOS

or other real-time operating systems.

Exposure to

model-based development tools

(e.g., MATLAB/Simulink) or auto-code environments.

Knowledge of

bootloaders, flash reprogramming , or secure firmware update methods.

Proficiency with

Python or Bash

for test automation or build scripting.

Familiarity with

software quality practices

such as unit testing, code coverage, and CI/CD pipelines.

Understanding of

functional safety (ISO 26262)

or reliability-critical software development is a plus.

Experience in

heavy equipment, defense, agricultural, or automotive embedded control systems

strongly.
