Work Schedule: This position works on an assigned officer 28‑day rotation. Officers will work 12 hour shifts from 6am to 6pm and will rotate from days to nights every 56 days.

Advertised Job Summary Police Officer – University of South Carolina Upstate

The Campus Police Officer performs the duties of a state law enforcement officer for the University of South Carolina Upstate in accordance with South Carolina Code of Laws 23‑6‑430 by enforcing state criminal and traffic laws and policies, rules and regulations of the University. The officer protects persons and property while enforcing university rules and provides highly visible patrols within the University’s sphere of influence.

Minimum Required Education and Experience No specific education or experience required.

Required Certification, Licensure/Other Credentials Possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.

Preferred Qualifications An associate or bachelor's degree in criminal justice or a related field.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities Ability to handle stressful situations including mentally unstable persons and angry, violent or distressed persons while maintaining composure and professionalism. Ability to work night shifts, maintain confidentiality of investigations, possess effective communication skills and work effectively with a diverse community. Must be physically qualified and have no criminal record. Must pass a background investigation and complete the SC Criminal Justice Academy and be certified by the SC Law Enforcement Training Council before assuming police duties.

Job Duties

Patrol the University Campus to protect and secure persons or property while deterring crime and detecting violations of the law, including traffic control duties, investigating criminal violations and securing crime scenes; promote and actively participate in community policing and secure all campus buildings. (Percentage of Time: 50%)

Respond to all calls for service including emergencies, complaints, accidents, disturbances, medical calls, and requests for vehicle unlocks or battery jumps, taking appropriate action and completing all necessary reports. (Percentage of Time: 25%)

Conduct highly visible patrols within the University’s sphere of influence (1/2 mile from campus borders) to assist Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Department patrols and calls for service including the five apartment complexes where many students reside. (Percentage of Time: 15%)

Make presentations to student organizations, faculty and staff. (Percentage of Time: 5%)

Perform other duties as required or assigned. (Percentage of Time: 5%)

Sign‑On Bonus $7,500 sign‑on bonus for new hires who are currently working as a Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer certified by the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy or have been inactive with a law enforcement agency for less than 12 months and can have Class 1 certification immediately reinstated upon hire.

$1,750 after successful completion of field training;

$750 after successful completion of 1st anniversary;

$2,500 after successful completion of 2nd anniversary;

$2,500 after successful completion of 3rd anniversary.
