About Us Row New York is a sports-based youth development organization founded on the premise that the discipline and teamwork that rowing instills, when combined with rigorous academic support, have the power to change lives. At full capacity, our Youth Program serves over 175 high school student-athletes from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. It is a high-dosage, year-round rowing and academic program with a goal of ensuring that 100% of our young people graduate high school and matriculate to college or begin an alternative post-secondary plan. In addition, we offer rowing to New Yorkers of all ages who are either people with physical or cognitive disabilities, military veterans, or local community members. Lastly, Row New York offers summer camps and a fee-for-service rowing program for New York City independent high schools. Our programs are offered at two rowing sites: Upper Manhattan and Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
Position Summary Row New York offers turn-key scholastic rowing programs to New York City independent high schools that wish to offer their own rowing teams. Programs run from late February through the end of May and take place at the partner school for indoor practice and at Row New York’s rowing site in Upper Manhattan (Inwood). Row New York seeks passionate and knowledgeable youth rowing coaches to help coach a Scholastic Rowing League team for high school athletes attending Riverdale Country School. The Riverdale team is made up of 30 athletes and ranges in experience level from first year rowers to competitive four year Varsity athletes. Riverdale Athletics’ mission is to provide a meaningful athletic experience for each student-athlete, while maximizing student participation, promoting sportsmanship, representing the school with integrity, and understanding the importance of balancing the commitments of being a student-athlete.
SRL coaching positions are part‑time and for the spring rowing season only. The position will require attendance at indoor training sessions at Riverdale’s campus in the Bronx and on‑water practices in Upper Manhattan (Inwood). Pay is at a competitive hourly rate based on level of experience. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced rowers looking to build their coaching resumes.
Key Responsibilities
Help to plan and execute the day to day operations of the assigned school’s rowing program
Coach rowing to high school participants in a safe, inclusive, and competitive environment
Plan, oversee, and participate in special events throughout the season including parent meetings and regattas
Collaborate with School Administration and Row New York staff to ensure program vision and goals are met
Model exemplary character and leadership, and foster strong positive relationships with all participants
Work cooperatively with Row New York’s coaches and operations staff to support smooth and safe boathouse operations and functionality at all times
Assist with equipment preparation, maintenance and minor repairs, as needed
Adhere to Row New York’s and the Riverdale Country School’s applicable codes of conduct, safety standards, and boathouse procedures at all times
Attend all pre‑season training and onboarding sessions, programming sessions and planned events throughout the season
Qualifications
Minimum 3 years of competitive rowing experience; collegiate/elite level rowing background and coaching experience strongly preferred
Experience working with youth strongly preferred (volunteer experience will be considered)
High level of professionalism and a strong work ethic required
Ability to help create and promote a positive and inclusive team culture
Strong and reliable communication skills; comfortable speaking in front of a group
Proactive problem‑solver who demonstrates initiative and strong organizational skills
Ability to work collaboratively with other coaches and staff running programs out of the same facility
Ability to observe appropriate professional boundaries and maintain confidentiality with student/family information
Outboard motor launch driving experience strongly preferred; willingness and ability to learn required
Within first two weeks of employment, coaches must become certified in First Aid/CPR, SafeSport, New York State safe boating, and the ability to drive a coaching launch. As of January 2025, all coaches must maintain at least a Level 1 USR Coaching Certification. Fees and time spent completing required certifications are paid by Row New York.
Preliminary Schedules The schedule below is currently tentative and is subject to change, but is generally accurate based on prior seasons. Please note that all indoor practices will be held on campus in the Bronx and on‑water practices at Row New York’s Upper Manhattan rowing site. The season starts February 23 with indoor rowing only, moving to water by April 7 (weather permitting).
Indoor program: February 23 – March 19 held at Riverdale after school 5 days per week, approximately 3:15pm – 6:15pm;
April 7 – May 23 after school 2 days per week, approximately 3:00pm – 5:30pm
Spring Break Training Trip in Tennessee: March 27 to April 1
On‑water: April 7 – May 23, 4 days per week (3 weekdays 3:30pm – 6:30pm; Saturdays 8:30am – 12:30pm when no regattas/scrimmages)
Weekend regattas and scrimmages will be scheduled in April and May, including travel to New York State Championships.
$28-$30 per hour
