Departmental Overview: Established July 1, 2023, the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society (CDSS) is the first new college at Berkeley in over 50 years. It offers outstanding undergraduate programs in Computer Science, Data Science, and Statistics, and utilizes interdisciplinary research to tackle societal challenges through data science, machine learning, and AI.
Undergraduate Advising Office (UAO): The UAO provides academic advising to newly admitted, currently enrolled, and readmitted undergraduate students. It enforces and adjudicates academic regulations, works collaboratively with departments, and shares resources to support student success.
Responsibilities
50% Academic Advising
– Apply advanced advising theories to support undergraduates, advise on course options and degree requirements, empower students, build relationships, assess progress, place holds or success plans, counsel on complex issues, identify barriers, and provide guidance on enrichment opportunities.
30% Leadership and Policy Formulation
– Serve as an academic advising expert, advise deans and departmental advisers, review policy applicability, interpret and maintain consistent application of College policies, recommend policy changes, troubleshoot complex policies, contribute to staff training, and promote inclusion and belonging.
15% Projects
– Collaborate with advising staff to implement college‑wide initiatives, assist in admissions outreach, serve on committees, and perform other duties as assigned.
5% Professional Development and Growth
– Engage in trainings, workshops, conferences, and seminars relevant to the position.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience.
Proven advising skills with strong decision‑making and judgment.
Strong organizational and planning skills, ability to prioritize workload under time constraints.
Interpersonal skills to work collaboratively, foster a team environment, and adapt in a diverse inclusive campus climate.
Broad knowledge of learning theories.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.
Advanced knowledge of student development theory.
Knowledge of common university‑specific computer applications, university and departmental procedures, and risk assessment.
Thorough knowledge of college policies, procedures, and requirements.
Skills in project management, social perception, and program improvement.
FERPA knowledge.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience.
Salary & Benefits Base salary range is $70,100 – $95,400. This 100 % FTE career position is eligible for full benefits. For more information, visit the UC Berkeley Compensation & Benefits website.
