The House of Refuge is seeking a dedicated Chief Development Officer (CDO) to help set direction and ensure the longevity of our organization. The CDO will lead and implement the organization’s fundraising strategy, build and manage the development team, and drive advocacy and awareness of the organization’s mission to expand impact and growth.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising and marketing strategy that includes individual, corporate, and foundation donors.

Lead and manage all aspects of the fundraising program: major gifts, planned giving, annual fund, special events, and grant writing.

Design and execute a marketing strategy to support fundraising efforts, creating collateral, social media content, newsletters, and web materials.

Collaborate with the CEO and Board of Directors to maintain relationships with key stakeholders, donors, volunteers, and community leaders.

Elevate awareness and advocacy of the organization’s mission through public events, media, and community forums.

Build and mentor a high‑performing development team, providing leadership, guidance, and performance evaluation.

Implement a donor‑centered approach, including recognition programs and stewardship activities.

Manage systems and processes for gift processing, database management, and reporting.

Lead the annual planning and budgeting process for the development department, ensuring SMART goals.

Provide regular updates to the CEO on fundraising progress and recommend course corrections.

Qualifications

Passion for the organization’s mission and a deep understanding of nonprofit values.

Proven experience leading a team and securing funding from multiple sources with a track record of achieving goals.

Strong communication and interpersonal skills with experience in public speaking and external relations.

Experience creating strategic multi‑year fundraising plans and building consensus among stakeholders.

Demonstrated success in staff management and mentorship, fostering a positive work culture.

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality.

Proficiency in Microsoft Office, database functions, and preferably DonorPerfect.

Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

Minimum 5 years of nonprofit fundraising experience, including at least 3 years in a leadership role.

Working Conditions The CDO will work in a fast‑paced nonprofit environment, coordinating with staff across departments and engaging with external stakeholders. The position requires occasional evenings and weekends for donor meetings and events. The candidate must agree to, and successfully pass, a criminal background check and drug test.
