JHPD Lateral Police Sergeant
Starting Salary:

Johns Hopkins University Police Department is seeking highly motivated individuals to serve as Police Sergeants. This position is available to current, retired, or previously certified police officers only. Specific Duties and Responsibilities
Represents JHPD’s mission, vision, and values when interacting with the university, community, and advocacy groups. Coordinates JHPD resources and activities to address concerns about university and community issues. Provides full‑level law enforcement work, enforcing laws, rules, and regulations governing safety and protection of individuals, buildings, and property. Provides direct support for the allocation and direction of resources (staffing, vehicles, equipment, and supplies) and manages operational and overtime expenditures. Supervises day‑to‑day operations of a patrol area, including direct supervision and performance management of police officers. Ensures priorities and community policing strategies for the patrol area are properly managed and holds officers accountable for executing community initiatives. Conducts patrol functions regularly for training purposes and as needed. Engages proactively in community policing and models such practices for officers. Coaches subordinates on performance issues, trains them in general management skills, monitors professional behavior, and recommends corrective action. Supervises special assignments and details as required. Coordinates and cooperates with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff on investigations of complaints, criminal offenses, and disruptions. Communicates and supports effective relationships with faculty, staff, students, public, law‑enforcement agencies, and public officials. Participates in specialized unit activities such as crime prevention, recertification instruction, criminal investigations, or special events. Responds to calls for assistance and emergency service, de‑escalating situations as appropriate. Conducts investigations of incidents reported on the shift and coordinates preliminary investigative activities. Interacts with the university community, establishing rapport with surrounding communities. Directions traffic and assists with crowd control. Provides safety information and conducts community‑related public safety programs. Inspects and maintains assigned equipment and clothing. Performs or assists in collection and preservation of evidence. Conducts or assists with serving warrants and summonses. Prepares or assists with cases for court, including testifying when necessary. Collaborates with local and state law‑enforcement agencies. Performs office duties such as answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits, and providing general information. Maintains visitor logs. Performs related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years total service as a commissioned law‑enforcement officer. Minimum of two (2) years in the rank of Sergeant or equivalent supervisory experience. Distinguished service record: excellent performance rating and no serious or repeated disciplinary actions or citizen complaints. Preferred Qualifications
Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field. Comparative Compliance Standards (out‑of‑state applicants)
Minimum of 750 hours of acceptable entrance‑level police academy training (excluding firearms, field training, or in‑service training). Currently in good standing with a full‑service law‑enforcement agency or retired in good standing within 2 years. Provide academy curriculum, total hours, and graduation certificate. Conditions of Employment
Completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission‑recognized or approved Police Academy Training program. Successful completion of a Police Field Training program. Subject to pre‑employment and random drug testing. One‑year probationary period after successful completion of training. Other Requirements
Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police Training Commission or via Comparative Compliance Training for lateral candidates. Clery Act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and comply with Clery Act requirements. Eligibility Requirements
Citizen of the United States or permanent legal resident. Honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces or pending citizenship application. No felony convictions. Demonstrated physical ability to perform job. Valid driver’s license. Current MPTC certification. Excellent communication skills. This position works both indoors and outdoors, under all weather conditions, and may require operating a motor vehicle. Responsibilities include shift rotations, holidays, weekends, and possible emergency staffing. Physical Demands
Duty includes sitting, standing, walking, running, lifting, bending, stooping, reaching, and manual dexterity with eye‑hand coordination. Additional Compensation Incentives
$15,000 increase to base salary for successful completion of MPTC training and field training. 20% increase for Baltimore City residents. Salary Range
