Basic Function Under the supervision of the Director and Academic Specialists of the TRIO Upward Bound Programs (UBP), the Academic Tutor is responsible for providing tutorial assistance to assigned students in accordance with Upward Bound rules, policies and procedures. The Academic Tutor will support the academic needs of students in the federally mandated UB curriculum, which includes but is not limited to English, Literature, Laboratory Science, Math through Pre-Calculus, Social Science, and Foreign Language.

Representative Duties

Provides academic tutorial assistance to students for the purpose of improving their success in academics through a defined course of study.

Prepares evaluations on student's progress; monthly during the Academic Year Component (AYC) and if applicable on a bi-weekly basis during the Summer Residential Component (SRC).

Attends tutor orientation, training and meetings as directed.

Serves as a positive role model and mentor for UBP participants.

Meets regularly with the Project Coordinator and reports any participant concerns.

Participates in Upward Bound's extracurricular activities as directed.

Performs related duties as assigned.

Knowledge Of

Current theory and practice within the subject discipline.

Learning and motivation techniques.

The needs of students served by TRIO programs in a junior high school or secondary school environment.

Ability To

Demonstrate accurate knowledge in the subject field or discipline.

Exhibit sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, social, economic, cultural, physical ability and ethnic background of first‑generation and low‑income students.

Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing using tact, patience, and courtesy.

Work in a collaborative team environment.

Attend training sessions before the beginning of the AYC and SRC.

Operate a computer, relevant software, and office equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Successful completion of one year of college level coursework and in good academic standing at an accredited post‑secondary institution.

A minimum 3.0 GPA and a strong foundation in one of the following areas: Math, Science, Social Science, Foreign Language, or English.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience working with economically challenged and first‑generation student populations.

Physical Abilities Operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine, and computer printer; communicate to exchange information and make presentations; stationary position for extended periods of time; move or transport light objects; position self to store and/or retrieve files.

Working Environment Indoor and outdoor environment; seated for extended periods of time; subject to visiting a variety of target schools served by the TRIO Upward Bound Programs.

Hiring Range $18.00 - $20.00
