While many positions at Coinbase are remote-first, our approach is not entirely remote. Regular in-person participation is required throughout the year with team and company-wide offsites held several times annually to encourage collaboration and connection.
As a Staff Software Engineer on our Institutional team, you will balance individual contributions with project leadership, drive technical direction, and mentor fellow engineers. We prioritize intellectual curiosity, collaboration across the organization, and the creation of an inclusive and positive work environment. Our engineering team uses a diverse tech stack, and we trust our engineers to quickly learn and adapt to various technologies.
Key Responsibilities:
Design and build distributed systems.
Collaborate with management and stakeholders to outline strategic roadmaps.
Oversee individual project priorities, deadlines, and deliverables based on your expertise.
Guide and train team members on best practices in design and coding.
Develop core infrastructure components utilized by engineering teams in production (e.g., dynamic configuration, secrets management, container orchestration).
Produce high-quality, well-tested code to fulfill customer needs.
Qualifications: 8+ years of experience in software engineering.
Proven experience designing and implementing solutions for complex, ambiguous problems.
Strong passion for creating an open financial system that unites the world.
Preferred Qualifications: Experience in rapid company growth from a small team to hundreds of engineers.
Familiarity with blockchain technologies (Bitcoin, Ethereum, etc.).
Experience transitioning a large monolithic application into microservices.
Proficiency in languages and frameworks like Golang, Ruby, Docker, Sinatra, Rails, and Postgres.
Experience building financial systems with high reliability and security standards.
Knowledge of onchain activities, Ethereum interactions, and blockchain-based services.
