Position Overview The Indirect Tax Manager will oversee all aspects of indirect taxation for a rapidly growing, multi‑entity, multi‑state organization. Responsibilities include managing sales, use, excise, property, and other non‑income tax filings, account reconciliations, and related systems analyses. The role collaborates closely with finance and operations teams, reports to the Tax Director, and manages the Senior Tax Analyst within the tax department.
Job Responsibilities
Manage and assist in the preparation and filing of U.S. sales/use tax returns, property tax returns, excise tax returns, and other miscellaneous state and local business filings.
Research applicable indirect tax laws, exemptions, and credits.
Resolve tax notices and correspondence from state and local tax authorities.
Prepare and/or review month‑end indirect tax journal entries and related account reconciliations.
Respond to customer inquiries regarding sales tax billing, exemption certificates, and related matters.
Manage and support sales/use tax audits and voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs).
Implement, test, and maintain both third‑party and in‑house sales tax software systems and ensure data integrity.
Oversee the process for collecting and maintaining sales tax exemption certificates.
Manage annual report filings for all states as required.
Results
Indirect Tax Compliance: 100% of sales/use, excise, and property tax filings submitted accurately and on time, with no penalties or missed deadlines.
Audit & Notice Resolution: All tax notices acknowledged within 5 business days and resolved within 30‑45 days; no repeat audit findings.
System & Process Integrity: Implementation or improvement of at least two automation/system enhancement projects per year (e.g., ERP and Tax Software integrations, exemption certificate management software, address verification software, process standardization).
Data accuracy reporting across accounting/tax systems (TaxJar/WooCommerce/ERP); 100% monthly reconciliations and immediate testing post IT updates and modifications.
Exemption & Documentation Management: 100% of exemption certificates current, valid, and stored per state requirements; no missing or expired certificates in audits.
Cross‑Department Support: ≥90% satisfaction from Finance, Operations, and Customer Service for responsiveness and accuracy of tax guidance.
Job Qualifications (Required)
Strong understanding of indirect tax laws, compliance, and related financial reporting.
Proven analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to manage multiple deadlines independently.
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and strong overall accounting and systems skills.
Experience with tax software (e.g., TaxJar, Avalara/Avatax, or similar) is preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Proactive, detail‑oriented, and able to identify and respond effectively to tax law changes.
Minimum of two years of relevant indirect tax experience required.
