A Day in the Life of a Landscape Designer As a
Landscape Designer
specializing in outdoor recreation, you'll be essential to the success of our
Outdoor Recreation
department, flexing your creative thinking and technical skills across projects like
new park and trail design
as well as
park and trail rehabilitation work . You start by analyzing surveys, field notes, and existing conditions assessments to develop the most effective strategy for completing the work on time and on budget, whether it involves a
major park rehabilitation
or
designing a new multi-use trail system .
This includes striving to
identify potential constraints
and brainstorming creative workarounds. Attentive to detail, you research relevant ordinances, codes, and best practices to ensure compliance before developing and presenting conceptual diagrams and narratives for approval. You then use AutoCAD to create
detailed landscape and civil plans , including site layout, grading, and construction details for projects ranging from
new park amenity areas
to
complex trail alignments , even performing hydraulic calculations for irrigation when needed. Throughout this process, you keep project managers and design staff updated on your progress, proactively addressing revisions and serving as a key component in successfully completing projects that enhance community outdoor spaces.
Qualifications for a Landscape Designer
Bachelor's degree in landscape architecture
OR
equivalent experience
High proficiency with AutoCAD 3D visualization software, Adobe Creative Suite, and Microsoft Office
Strong visual depth perception and the ability to distinguish colors
Valid driver's license and an acceptable driving record
Working knowledge of Lumion, SketchUp, or Rhino is preferred but not required
Relevant CAD design experience is a huge bonus; strong hand-drawn graphic skills also a plus
Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management skills
Quick-thinking problem solver who works well with a team
