THE OPPORTUNITY Peninsula Open Space Trust (POST), one of the premier land trusts in the United States, is soliciting applications and nominations for a new Chief Financial Officer (CFO). POST protects open space on the Peninsula and in the South Bay for the benefit of all. Since its founding in 1977, POST has protected more than 90,000 acres of permanent open space, farms, and parkland in San Mateo, Santa Clara, and Santa Cruze counties. POST’s approach includes fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and strong relationships with local indigenous groups. POST’s operating budget exceeds $40 million and its staff comprises approximately 74 people. Role of the Chief Financial Officer The CFO has overall responsibility for finance, accounting, operations, IT, facilities, and risk management for the organization. The CFO will lead the execution of POST’s long‑range plan, ensure the financial structures are in place to achieve POST’s ambitious strategic vision, and oversee the annual budgeting process for the organization’s operating budget of over $40 million. The CFO will drive a forward‑looking approach to technology, including artificial intelligence, and partner closely with the executive team, senior leaders, and staff to align systems, platforms, and processes with the organization’s needs. The CFO will also serve as a thought partner, providing strategic leadership across finance, investments, audits, compensation, budgeting, operations, risk, and technology. Key Responsibilities Act as Board Treasurer and maintain the integrity of all financial reporting and internal controls. Lead the annual budget and long‑range plan processes and present proposals to the Board of Directors and Compensation & Budget Committee. Serve as staff liaison to the Compensation & Budget, Investment, and Audit committees. Partner with the Chair of the Investment Committee to manage POST’s investment portfolio. Collaborate with the external accounting firm to plan and conduct the annual audit. Ensure compliance with POST’s lobbying limits and campaign and IRS reporting requirements. Facilitate the formulation of annual Total POST Goals. Oversee finance, accounting, facilities, IT, and risk management functions. Qualifications and Characteristics Bachelor’s degree in business administration, accounting, or related field; graduate degree and/or CPA preferred. Broad experience in accounting, finance, investments, risk management, business operations, and IT. Significant experience in a leadership role in finance/accounting. Demonstrated management strength in leading collaborative, empowered, and highly engaged teams. Forward‑looking use of technology to support mission. Understanding of non‑profit organizations. Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Experience working effectively with a Board of Directors. Connection to POST’s mission of protecting open space. Compensation and Location The expected salary range for the position is $279,990–$311,100. The CFO will be based in Palo Alto, California, and is expected to work on-site several days per week, with the possibility of a hybrid schedule within the guidelines of POST’s Hybrid Work Policy.
