Practice Technician – Mount Sinai Brooklyn – Dept. of Surgery – Full Time – Day Shift
Join Mount Sinai Health System as a Practice Technician (full‑time) in the Department of Surgery, Brooklyn. The role provides clinical office support to physicians and surgeons, performing patient care and administrative duties necessary to deliver quality patient care.
Responsibilities
Monitor patient flow in the waiting room and resolve registration and post‑visit processing issues.
Set up examination rooms and instruments in accordance with hospital and infection‑control policies.
Takes and monitors vital signs, including fetal heart rate when required.
Performs phlebotomy, point‑of‑care testing, and other procedures as ordered by physicians, including electrocardiograms.
Inventory, order or restock medical supplies; monitor expiration dates and dispose of supplies per policy.
Maintain logging systems for refrigeration, point‑of‑care testing, sterilization, and other processes.
Perform routine maintenance/cleaning of equipment and instruments; notify personnel of any equipment malfunction.
Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and legal regulations.
Follow personal‑protective‑equipment requirements to protect against exposure to blood, body fluids, chemicals, radiation, and hazardous substances.
Act calmly during emergencies, initiate CPR and provide necessary items to the response team.
Transport patients and equipment as needed.
Perform direct patient‑care duties assigned by RN/LPN/PA/MD within New York State Nurse Practice Act and MSHS policy and procedures.
Document in medical record / electronic medical record per hospital policy.
Greet and register patients; process forms, direct patients to appropriate areas, and arrange transportation needs.
Screens incoming calls, takes and responds to messages, and answers inquiries regarding department procedures, services, and programs.
Schedule appointments and complete pre‑registration via telephone, including insurance verification and full patient demographics collection in a computerized system.
Fulfill clerical responsibilities using the electronic medical record (EMR) system or manual means, including sending/receiving patient medical records, obtaining lab/x‑ray reports, discharge summaries, and referral information.
Complete forms and requisitions as needed, managing charts to ensure proper filing and chart maintenance.
Retrieve lab, pathology and diagnostic testing, and operative reports from computer systems.
Check, verify, and update insurance information using internal or electronic sources.
Obtain and document managed‑care referrals and pre‑certifications as required.
Support surgical or procedure scheduling and verify times with patients; prepare charts, pre‑admissions, and consent forms.
Qualifications
High School Diploma; preferred 1–2 years of current experience as a Medical Assistant.
Medical Assistant Certificate required; proficiency in EKG and phlebotomy.
Basic Life Support (BLS) certification from the American Heart Association.
Intermediate computer skills (Word, Excel).
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills; professional and courteous in dealing with patients and families; maintains confidentiality and a professional work environment.
Mandarin and/or Cantonese speaking a plus.
