Overview This 40‑hour per week position performs advanced professional criminal legal work for the County Prosecutor. The role involves considerable professional independence, handling a range of criminal matters, and may include supervising lower‑level attorneys.

Compensation Estimated total compensation:

$134,187 - $187,801 annually . The figure includes base salary, retirement, and benefits.

Responsibilities

Evaluate investigative results, decide whether to charge, and determine appropriate crime or referral decisions.

Prepare charging pleadings.

Prepare cases for trial, including interviewing witnesses, sorting evidence, conducting follow‑up investigations, drafting statements, and managing pretrial motions.

Present the state’s case in court on homicide, negligent homicide, fraud, arson, robbery, and other felonies.

Review and prepare appellate record and briefings for the Court of Appeals, Supreme Court and U.S. Supreme Court.

Perform related duties as required.

Qualifications

Juris Doctorate (J.D.) from an accredited law school.

Four (4) years of experience at a level equivalent to Attorney 2 or advanced professional legal training in civil or criminal law and procedure.

Member in good standing of the Washington State Bar Association.

For Public Defender and Counsel for Defense Departments only: if not licensed to practice in WA, meet APR 8–Exception for Indigent Representation requirements.

Candidate must be a member in good standing of another state bar and have applied for approval under WSBA APR 3.

Knowledge of criminal or civil law principles, judicial procedures, rules of evidence, effective case presentation, and litigation leadership.

Strong oral and written communication skills, ability to build working relationships with the public and court parties.

Capacity to analyze, evaluate, and organize facts, evidence, and legal procedures and present information clearly.

Skill in preparing a variety of legal documents and instruments.
