Under general supervision, the Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for technical work involving the application of radio nuclides to various designated portions of the body to assist physicians in detection, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and abnormalities. The work includes proper patient positioning, maintenance and adjustment of nuclear equipment, and management of radiographic files for a prescribed period.

Responsibilities

Instruct patients in preparation for the application of radio nuclides using specialized equipment and procedures; insert IV cannulae for injections.

Make adjustments to nuclear equipment to correct setting for each examination as prescribed by the attending physician.

Handle emergency situations.

Review the PACS processing of nuclear medicine.

Prepare and maintain records and files of procedures; purge outdated files as directed.

Troubleshoot equipment failure, make repairs where possible; ensure equipment is functioning properly on a continuous basis.

Requisition supplies as needed; consult with referring physicians as required.

Assist in providing training and technical direction to lower level technicians and nurses in nuclear procedures and processes.

Establish and maintain effective relations with medical and nursing staff to insure adequate and timely servicing of patients.

Assist in the development of techniques for procedures and assist in the use of a variety of equipment and procedures not routinely employed.

Participate in continuing education programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology; effectively use automated systems to perform work assignments; perform related duties as assigned.

Qualifications Good knowledge of modern procedures used in the performance of nuclear medicine examinations for diagnostic purposes; good knowledge of operation of all types of nuclear equipment; good knowledge of human anatomy; knowledge of required safety precautions; skill in operation and minor repair of complex nuclear equipment; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to direct and instruct others; ability to handle sick and injured patients properly; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e‑mail and database software; ability to read, write, speak, understand and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties; thoroughness; reliability; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.

Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience Must possess certification and maintain current registration with either the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist.

Special Note Education beyond the secondary level must be from an institution recognized or accredited by the Board of Regents of the New York State Education Department as a post‑secondary, degree‑granting institution.
