Our Opportunity Exponent's Vehicle Engineering Practice provides vehicle evaluation and testing services for a wide range of vehicles and equipment. The Test & Engineering Center (TEC) in Phoenix, Arizona conducts full‑scale vehicle testing, component testing, and battery testing.
We are currently seeking an
Instrumentation Technician 2
for our Phoenix, AZ TEC. In this role you will work as part of a technician team, supporting consultants in preparing and conducting system, subsystem, and component‑level tests.
You will be responsible for
Setting up and conducting instrumented test programs of all types
Configuring data acquisition systems, including Dewesoft, DTS, National Instruments (cDAQ, LabView, Diadem), automotive CAN devices, and others
Assisting with battery test set‑ups at cell, module, and pack levels
Installing strain gauges and wiring for load measurements unique to project needs
Working individually and in a team to determine best test methodologies and document test execution
Calibrating, maintaining, and repairing instrumentation equipment and transducers
Troubleshooting instrumentation and electronic systems
Designing circuits, breadboarding, and interpreting electrical/electronic schematics
Building cable assemblies that interface with various equipment
Serving as a lead technician in a fast‑paced environment with changing priorities
Supporting consultant engineers by developing and creating custom test setups
Specifying and evaluating new lab test equipment for existing and new test specifications
Building basic electronics equipment used for testing and interconnecting hardware
You will have the following skills and qualifications
Associate’s degree in Electronics, Instrumentation, or equivalent, or 1 year of instrumentation experience plus relevant education
Minimum 3 years of instrumented testing experience or equivalent combination
Working knowledge of test processes and standards
Familiarity with data acquisition, troubleshooting equipment (oscilloscope, DVM, etc.), and sensors (pressure transducers, accelerometers, load cells, potentiometers, etc.)
Understanding of instrumentation and system frequency response, including digital and analog filtering techniques
Creative problem‑solving skills to apply data acquisition knowledge to unique projects
Experience with equipment calibration procedures
Excellent soldering and electronic circuit design techniques
Interest in automotive systems and electronic devices
Ability to operate common hand and machine tools
Strong verbal communication skills, dedication to quality and accuracy
Understanding of interfacing electronics with PC‑based computers
Versatile, team‑oriented, and willing to work overtime to meet deadlines
Ability to work independently and in multidisciplinary teams
