Basic Function:
This position is part of Kern Community College District’s adjunct instructor pool. Qualified applicants will be considered for assignments at Cerro Coso Community College and other campus sites, which may include day, evening, weekend, large, or distance learning classes. The assignment is hourly and may vary based on the Lecture Hour Equivalent (LHE) formula.
Representative Duties:
Teach English as a second language courses to adult learners.
Maintain subject‑matter currency and develop and revise curriculum.
Use computer and multimedia technology to enhance instruction.
Collaborate with colleagues and participate in departmental, college, and discipline‑specific professional activities.
Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in teaching English as a second language or teaching English to speakers of other languages.
OR bachelor’s degree in education, English, linguistics, applied linguistics, a foreign language, composition, bilingual/bicultural studies, reading, or speech, plus a TESL certificate (which may be completed during the first year of employment as a noncredit instructor).
OR bachelor’s degree in a related major with one year experience teaching TESL in an accredited institution, plus a TESL certificate (which may be completed during the first two years of employment).
OR possession of a full‑time, clear California Designated Subjects Adult Education Teaching Credential authorizing instruction in English as a second language (or an equivalent credential).
Demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community college students.
Knowledge & Abilities:
Work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in a diverse environment.
Work with students of varied skills, motivations, and goals.
Develop curriculum, including different modalities.
Participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges and universities.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Maintain subject‑matter currency.
Assess student learning outcomes.
Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies.
Commitment to the California community college mission.
