THE POSITION Under the supervision of a supervisor in the Facilities Department, cleans, maintains and repairs District swimming pools and related equipment and facilities to ensure safe and sanitary conditions.

CURRENT OPENINGS: One 12-month/40 hours per week position. Salary placement will be on Range 21 of the CSEA Salary Schedule "B." Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($24.07 per hour) of this salary range.

Brushes and scrubs pool tiles, and vacuums swimming pool according to established procedures. Inspects, adjusts and performs preventive maintenance to pool machinery and equipment including pumps, filtration equipment and controls, co-generation system, boilers and chemical pumps. Performs a variety of cleaning duties including sweeping and hosing decks, emptying trash, cleaning drains, hair strainers, and gutters. Checks, calibrates, and adjusts the automatic chlorination system. Monitors and adjusts chemical levels to maintain healthy water conditions. Applies a variety of chemicals, including liquid chlorine, algaecides, acids and bases, as needed to address changing water conditions. Inspects pool facilities for proper and safe conditions and operation including gates, fencing, diving boards, ladders, guard towers, lights and safety equipment. Monitors automated backwashing procedures and performs manual backwashes when needed. Checks and maintains pool temperature and pressure gauges. Coordinates schedules and resolves issues with physical education teachers and aquatic coaches. Coordinates major repairs with Facilities Department staff and outside vendors. Maintains operational log of daily maintenance inspections. Orders and stores related supplies, chemicals and parts, maintaining proper inventory and related records. OTHER RELATED DUTIES

May use a respirator when checking pool chemicals. May fire and service a low-pressure boiler. May perform basic maintenance duties on pool equipment. May assist on basic maintenance duties. May assist in performing building inspections and reporting equipment and structural repairs. May make minor repairs. May load, unload, and move equipment, furniture, and supplies. Performs other related duties as directed.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS AMONG RELATED CLASSES A Pool Maintenance Worker tests swimming pool water, operates pool equipment, and performs a variety of custodial work to keep a school site's swimming pool facility in a sanitary and orderly condition.

An Locker Room Manager (Female) and Locker Room Manager (Male) in addition to performing custodial and locker room duties (e.g. issuing lockers, maintaining records), assists the Pool Maintenance Worker in pool maintenance functions by checking pool Chlorine and pH levels daily.

A Custodian II performs varied custodian, grounds, and minor maintenance duties, which includes the responsibility of securing assigned areas.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Employees in this classification stand, walk, climb ladders, swim, lift and carry up to 50 lbs. (some positions may occasionally lift up to 100 lbs., with assistance), carry, push, pull, stoop, bend repeatedly, repetitively use fingers, use wrist or hands in applying pressure or in a twisting motion, simultaneously use both hands and/or both legs, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, discern hue gradation of chemical tests, speak clearly, and hear well.

Minimum Qualifications

Education: No education required.

Experience: One year of experience in custodial, building, or pool maintenance work.

Special:

A valid Swimming Pool Service Technician certificate must be obtained within six months of employment. Possession of a valid California Class C Driver license. Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continue to maintain insurability. Successfully complete a pre-employment physical examination. Federal law requires that employees receive additional ACBM training if they work in areas in which asbestos building materials may be disturbed. This training is provided by the District within the first 60 days of employment. A Red Cross First-Aid Certificate is desirable.

Safety procedures and practices related to pool operation, maintenance, and recognizing potential hazards. Basic First Aid procedures. Proper and safe use of cleaning materials, such as soaps, detergents, ammonia, disinfectants, and multi-purpose cleaning agents or chemicals. Safely use swimming pool maintenance and custodial equipment. Safely use chemical and cleaning agents used in swimming pool maintenance and custodial work. Safely lift and move heavy supplies, equipment, and furniture. Safely work in and around a swimming pool. Detect need for necessary maintenance of pool equipment and building facilities. Swim 50 feet without assistance. Perform heavy manual labor. Perform minor non-technical repairs. Show a high level of care and thoroughness when cleaning. Get things done well and efficiently, and stay clear and focused on what is expected or needs to be accomplished. Learn related computer applications. Be dependable to follow and have others follow instructions including following policies and procedures. Be trust worthy and responsible for one's own actions. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Communicate orally on a one-to-one basis for the purpose of providing and obtaining information. Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships. Use good judgment in choosing courses of action.

General Information The screening process for this position, which may be subject to modification, will include some form of an application screening, initial screening of qualifications, documentation/certification screening, and in some instances supplemental application screening. Paid Vacation Vacation is prorated for all classified employees, based on the hours and months worked per year. Below is the vacation schedule for classified supervisors and classified staff.

Classified Employee Vacation Chart 1-5 years of service

One day of vacation will be earned per month worked. 6-10 years of service

One and one-quarter (1 ¼) days of vacation will be earned per month worked. 11-15 years of service

One and one-half (1 ½) days of vacation will be earned per month worked. 16-20 years of service

One and three-fourths (1 ¾) days of vacation will be earned per month worked. 21 + years of service

Two (2) days of vacation will be earned per month worked.

Health Benefits For positions 35 hours or more per week the District contributes $12,900 (subject to change) toward annual premium for medical, dental, vision and life insurance coverage. Partially paid benefits are available for part-time (20-34) hour employees. The District participates in the Public Employees' Retirement System (PERS). Lifetime retirement benefits provided for eligible retirees.

Paid Sick Leave Every regular classified employee, probationary or permanent, can earn paid sick leave credit(s) based on one day for each month in which such employees are in a paid status with the District. Earned, but unused sick leave can accumulate without limit. Full-time classified employees (those who work 8 hours per day, 5 days per week and 12 months per year) will normally earn twelve (12) days of sick leave credit(s) during each fiscal year. 01

In determining qualifying experience, applicants' part-time employment will only receive partial credit based on the number of hours worked per week. For example purposes only, a position that works 40 hours a week for one year would get one year of credit, whereas a position that works 20 hours a week for one year would get six months of credit.
