The Permit Technician performs administrative, clerical and technical office work in support of the Department of Inspection. Provides information related to building permit requirements, codes, and inspection procedures to contractors, design professionals, and the public; processes building permit applications and issues building permits.

Duties

Receive applications and issue various types of permits for the Department of Inspection

Provide front-counter service to building contractors and the general public.

Explain process to applicants and assist with completion of application. Answer all applicable questions

Review application and submitted plans for completeness and accuracy

Route application to appropriate department and staff person for review

Issue permits that do not require significant review (over-the-counter permits)

Process permits and verify licensing

Explain requirements for licensing and assist contractors and business owners with completion of licensing application form. Answer all applicable questions

Verify the appropriate staff has approved license

Work with other City staff and State agencies to ensure that businesses are licensed as required by law

Maintain records and files on all contractor licenses

Schedule inspections and appointments

Respond to customer requests for inspections by telephone and in person

Inquire about the customer's specific needs to ensure appropriate service is provided in a manner consistent with efficient use of Inspector's time

Assist in developing Inspectors' Daily Schedule using computer-based system

Perform data entry of permits, licenses, and inspection results. Process monthly activity reports summarizing permit and inspection activity Collect fees and issue receipts for permits and licenses

Assign finance revenue code to all funds received

Balance cash receipts daily and prepare deposit to finance

Receive, document and route complaints for nuisance abatement, zoning, property maintenance, and minimum housing matters

Explain process to complainants and assist with submittal of complaints

Composes and prepares various correspondences.

Coordinates documentation and legal notifications with third parties

Process inspector reports and assist with follow-up for non-compliance

Prepare reports summarizing monthly activity, violation trends, heat maps and other analytics.

Qualifications

Minimum Associates Degree or equivalent work experience

Two years general office experience, which includes providing customer service both on the phone and in person

Computer experience, including data entry with Microsoft Office applications and database entry

Ability to communicate clearly, both verbally and in writing

Previous experience in working with customer service issues and resolving problems or complaints

Desired Qualifications

ICC Permit Technician Certification

Knowledge of City and State regulations related to building, housing, zoning, and licensing,

Demonstrated familiarity with permitting and Microsoft Office software

Additional education in related field
