This role supports a group of four small but rapidly growing construction companies and provides hands-on experience in all aspects of Human Resources, from recruiting and onboarding to compliance, benefits, and enhancing company culture. Functional Summary The HR Specialist is essential in managing and executing all daily human resources operations across our organization. This role encompasses the entire employee lifecycle—from recruitment and onboarding to benefits, payroll, compliance, and employee relations. The HR Specialist will be a vital resource for employees and management, ensuring seamless operations and adherence to policies and regulations at all levels. Key Responsibilities Recruitment & Onboarding Oversee full-cycle recruiting activities: crafting job postings, sourcing candidates, conducting interviews, collaborating with hiring managers, and extending job offers. Facilitate new hire onboarding, including orientation, documentation, technology access, and training coordination. Enhance employer branding to attract exceptional talent. Coordinate and administer background checks and drug screenings for new hires. Ensure all onboarding documentation and system configurations are completed in accordance with company policies. Employee Relations & Engagement Act as the primary contact for employee inquiries, escalating matters when necessary. Assist managers in navigating employee relations issues while ensuring fairness and compliance. Plan and execute employee appreciation activities, training sessions, and engagement initiatives. Conduct employee surveys and provide insightful feedback to leadership. Payroll & Benefits Administration Ensure timely and accurate payroll processing, including wage adjustments, deductions, and reimbursements. Manage employee benefits programs (health, dental, disability, 401k, etc.), including enrollment, adjustments, and employee guidance. Track and reconcile payroll liabilities, ensuring prompt remittance of all taxes and contributions. Uphold confidentiality concerning sensitive employee and payroll information. Compliance & Recordkeeping Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local employment laws and regulations. Organize and update personnel files, I-9 documentation, and necessary postings. Monitor and report compliance requirements (EEO, OSHA, FMLA, ADA, ESST, etc.). Assist with audits and manage responses to government agency queries. HR Operations & Administration Administer HRIS, timekeeping, and applicant tracking systems effectively. Generate HR reports and metrics (turnover, retention, headcount, recruitment pipeline, etc.). Keep job descriptions and organizational charts current and accurate. Support updates to policies and the rollout of HR programs. Ensure employee files and records are maintained per retention policies and legal standards. Document and uphold HR standard operating procedures (SOPs) for consistency across all HR functions. Maintain a high level of confidentiality in managing all employee information and communications. Performance Management Support managers in administering the performance management process, including goal setting and performance reviews. Provide tools and guidance to promote effective employee feedback and development. Workers Compensation Manage and track workers' compensation claims, coordinating efforts among managers, employees, and insurance carriers. Ensure clear communication with injured employees and compliance with return-to-work programs. Learning & Development Organize training programs for compliance, leadership development, and skill enhancement. Monitor certifications and renewals required for employees. Offer coaching and support to employees and managers as needed. Qualifications Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field preferred. 3-5 years of progressive HR experience; prior generalist experience is highly preferred. Strong knowledge of employment laws and HR best practices. Experience with payroll systems and HRIS (BambooHR or similar). Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills. Ability to handle confidential information with the utmost integrity. Abilities Detail-oriented with strong time management abilities. Exceptional problem-solving and decision-making skills. High emotional intelligence and the ability to build trust at all levels. Adept at managing multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment. Proactive self-starter capable of independently managing HR operations. Working Conditions Occasional travel may be required. Work is primarily conducted in an office environment. Must adhere to the company’s drug and alcohol testing requirements.
