The Senior BESS Commissioning Manager is responsible for overseeing all BESS commissioning activities performed at assigned project sites. They ensure adherence to contractual conditions, timelines, safety, and quality requirements while coordinating with utilities, construction and safety teams, suppliers, and subcontractors. The role collaborates with contracting and design teams to validate commissioning requirements, deliverables, and schedules. The Senior BESS Commissioning Manager leads junior commissioning personnel in troubleshooting, testing, energization, and startup of power plant equipment. The position reports to the Director of Commissioning or another senior management person and may involve travel up to 30% of the time. Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities Review contracts, subcontracts, and project drawings to ensure delivered requirements are met and aligned with internal BESS commissioning requisites. Manage BESS Commissioning scopes across multiple projects, including creating site?specific commissioning schedules, plans, testing documents, and startup procedures. Execute, maintain, and enforce Qcells safety procedures and protocols. Coordinate and perform BESS commissioning activities, providing daily project status reports. Engage in daily/weekly interactions with peer departments, subcontractors, equipment vendors, and customer entities. Prepare plans at the beginning of projects for receiving, storing, and managing materials, PPE, and tools. Manage and provide training to junior BESS commissioning technicians, including performing electrical testing and troubleshooting. Maintain commissioning deliverables, logs, equipment checklists, and LOTO logs. Coordinate and perform energization, startup, and troubleshooting of substations and BESS?commissioned field equipment, generating methods statements. Manage time and work priorities independently. Work cross?departmentally to ensure the BESS commissioning teams have all necessary tools to safely and efficiently perform commissioning services. Maintain regular attendance in accordance with the company's attendance policy and supervisory assignment. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned by Management.
Required Qualifications
8+ years of BESS commissioning or electrical experience in renewable energy. Experience and ability to lead remote teams. Experience and ability to effectively communicate with all key stakeholders, including Engineering, Construction, Contracting, Leadership, vendors, and clients. OSHA 30 Certification. NFPA 70E Certification. Practical knowledge of the electrical requirements of a utility?scale PV system, including substation and PV field components, testing requirements, and test equipment. Knowledge of BESS commissioning & electrical standards (NETA, IEEE, IEC, ANSI, NEC, NERC). High understanding of SCADA infrastructure. Understanding of relay testing and commissioning processes. Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite. Flexible schedule and willingness to travel when needed.
Project Site Requirements
Ability to work outdoors exposed to the elements. Will sit, stand, walk short distances, and climb stairs occasionally. Must be able to lift up to 40 lbs. and use hands to grasp, lift, handle, and carry frequently. Must comply with all safety standards and procedures. May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist frequently, including kneeling or bending.
Preferred Qualifications
Electrical Engineering degree or equivalent. NETA Level I, II, or III Certification or equivalent. Inverter manufacturer troubleshooting training.
Physical Demands
Frequently standing and moving up to 90% of the workday. Operating equipmententering and exiting up to 90% of the time. Move/traverse: frequently bend, stand, stoop and/or walk. Carry weight: frequently lift objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Hearing/Speech: frequent communication with ability to hear and talk. Sight: frequent use of vision to detect images on computer, documents, and objects. Climb: occasionally ascend/descend stairs or trenches. Travel: up to 30% as needed.
Work Environment
Regular professional, construction site setting. Noise level ranges from low to moderate in office trailer, moderate to high at construction sites. Flexibility to work night shifts. Under the Office Mobilization Plan (OMP) policy, the role may transition to onsite or hybrid arrangement as determined by business needs.
