We are seeking an experienced and detail-oriented
NY Reader/Underwriter
to join our Hudson United Title team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for examining and interpreting New York property records, identifying title defects, and preparing accurate title commitments and reports in compliance with underwriting guidelines and state regulations.
Key Responsibilities
Examine public records, legal documents, tax records, and title plants to determine the status of title for residential and/or commercial properties in New York.
Identify any title defects, liens, encumbrances, or other issues that could affect insurability.
Prepare and issue clear and accurate title commitments, preliminary reports, and policies based on underwriting standards.
Communicate with clients, attorneys, examiners, closers, and internal departments to resolve title issues and clarify findings.
Ensure compliance with all New York State title insurance regulations and company underwriting guidelines.
Provide underwriting decisions and elevate complex issues to senior underwriters or counsel when needed.
Maintain updated knowledge of NY title laws, industry trends, and underwriting practices.
Qualifications
3+ years of experience as a title reader, examiner, or underwriter focused on New York properties.
In-depth knowledge of New York real estate and title insurance practices, legal documents, and recording requirements.
Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
Proficient in title production software (e.g., SoftPro, ResWare, Qualia, RamQuest).
Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and manage multiple files and deadlines efficiently.
Preferred Qualifications
NY Title Insurance license (optional but preferred).
Experience with both residential and commercial transactions.
Familiarity with major underwriter guidelines (e.g., Fidelity, First American, Stewart, Old Republic).
