Position Highlights

The primary responsibility of the Ancillary, Freelance, ASL Interpreter is to perform simultaneous interpreting and transliterating duties for deaf and/or hard of hearing individuals in fast paced, highly technical settings encompassing all levels of academia and that require autonomous decision-making. Campus settings include providing services for students, staff, and campus classes, meetings, or presentations, including some campus-wide events or activities. click here . Duties & Responsibilities

Duties and Responsibilities: As needed, interprets/transliterates for the Deaf campus community and visitors to provide access for classroom/education related meetings, programs, or activities. Settings include classrooms, one-on-one or group meetings for students, college sponsored events or presentations, campus-wide events such as Orientation, Commencement, etc. Requests may include hours during evenings and weekends and non-campus locations. Performs independent needs assessment regarding cultural and language variables to determine the most appropriate interpreting methods and strategies to employ. Follows and maintains strict confidentiality in all interactions following Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) Code of Ethics standards. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Knowledge of and skill with various methods of expressive and voice interpreting/transliterating. Knowledge of the ethical standards set forth by the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Incorporated. Knowledge of standard practices in interpreting/transliterating at the postsecondary level. Knowledge of cultural aspects of deafness and cross-cultural mediation. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing. Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required. Possession of a valid Interpreter Generalist license issued by the state of Arizona; AND Minimum of three (3) years of experience in interpreting at the postsecondary level.

Preferred Qualifications

Completion of an accredited American Sign Language interpreting program. Possession of a national certification of interpreting from the National Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, or Board for Evaluation of Interpreter (BEI).
