JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE :

Director of Transportation

POSITION SUMMARY:

Directs, plans, and monitors the bus transportation operations and bus vehicle maintenance for the district in accordance with district policy, local, state, and federal requirements.

REPORTS TO :

Chief Financial Officer

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS :

Organizes, implements and manages pupil transportation system within the policy of the Board of Education. Responsible for the supervision of dispatcher, office professional, and driver employees. Prepares and monitors the departmental budget. Develops reports as required by the district and the State. Develops and maintains a list of students eligible for transportation. Coordinates with district administration to plan and implement efficient route schedules for pickup and drop-off of students served by the district. Oversees and ensures compliance with all regulations governing bus driver licensing and Department of Transportation regulations. Screens, interviews, and recommends the employment or termination of staff to Human Resources. Collaborates with District during inclement weather regarding school closing and student safety. Communicates with staff, administrators, parents, and community to resolve transportation issues including routes, stops, driver conduct, and measurements pertaining to eligible bus riders. Answers and responds to police calls after regular working hours. In collaboration with the Chief Financial Officer, develops preferred supplier list for transportation parts and equipment. Develops and provides an in-service training program for all transportation staff. Collaborates with building administrators regarding student discipline concerns on buses. Develops pre and post trip vehicle inspections procedures and maintenance reporting routines. Maintains accurate records for preparation of state and local reports, such as inventories, pupil transportation, route mileage, time records, special trip records, traffic accidents and other required reports. Interprets and communicates transportation procedures and regulations to public and staff. Incorporates transportation routing software system in the planning, forecasting and assigning of transportation services. Provides recommendations for improvement of transportation services and efficiency. Conducts safety inspections and accident investigations to create a safe environment for students and staff. Participates in building/facility planning teams. Shares emergency readiness response duties for 24 hour operational needs. Oversees bus maintenance operations and routines to ensure buses are readied for the annual Missouri State Highway Patrol state safety inspection. Performs other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

-Exerts 10 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and

-Ability to sit for long periods of time throughout the day and work for lengthy periods at computer, and

-Ability to move through transportation facility, and

-Ability to be physically active as necessary to monitor buses and parking area, and

-Ability to visit multiple locations on a continual basis.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES :

Vocational Preparation : (Experience)

-Minimum of 5 years of experience in transportation supervision.

-Valid driver's license and CDL.

-Experience with and knowledge of technology, including Microsoft Office and GPS tools.

-Ability to evaluate and solve problems.

-Ability to recognize common safety and health hazards.

Education Preparation : (Formal and Informal)

Bachelor's degree preferred, or a combination of education and work experience.
