Manufacturing Engineer - Electronics in Racine

Acorn is seeking an experienced Manufacturing Engineer to optimize our electronic assembly operations and drive continuous improvement initiatives. This role will have direct ownership of critical production equipment including SMT processes, AOI inspection, wave and selective soldering, conformal coating, and potting systems while identifying opportunities for efficiency and defect reduction.
Equipment Ownership & Optimization
Participate in maintenance and process controls of SMT and AOI operations
Own and maintain wave solder, selective solder, and conformal coating machines
Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules to maximize equipment uptime
Optimize process parameters for first pass yield improvements and quality consistency
Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate with vendors for technical support
Maintain detailed documentation of equipment specifications, process parameters, and maintenance records
Process Engineering & Improvement
Review and analyze all production process flows for efficiency and cost reduction opportunities
Implement lean manufacturing principles to eliminate waste and reduce cycle times
Develop and maintain work instructions, process control plans, and quality procedures
Design and implement process improvements using statistical methods and data analysis
Provide continuous feedback loop to production planning on routing enhancements and changes
Quality & Defect Reduction
Establish statistical process control (SPC) systems for critical processes
Investigate root causes of quality issues and implement corrective actions
Collaborate with Quality team to reduce scrap, rework, and field failures
Support new product introduction (NPI) with process development and validation
Technical Leadership & Training
Train production operators on proper equipment operation and process control procedures
Provide technical guidance to manufacturing teams on process-related issues
Mentor junior engineers and technicians for equipment ownership
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Mechanical, Industrial, or Electrical Engineering
3-5 years minimum experience
in electronics manufacturing environment
Direct hands‑on experience with:
Surface Mount equipment and AOI processes
Wave soldering equipment and processes
Selective soldering systems and programming
Conformal coating application and curing processes
Potting/encapsulation equipment and materials
PCB preparation equipment (cleaning, flux application, etc.)
Strong understanding of SMT and Thru‑hole assembly processes and IPC standards
Experience with process control systems and statistical analysis
Proficiency in troubleshooting complex manufacturing equipment
Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and procedures
Qualifications
Experience with automation and robotics in electronics manufacturing
Six Sigma Green Belt or similar continuous improvement certification
Familiarity with ERP/MES and scheduling systems
Experience with CAD software for fixture design
Knowledge of environmental regulations related to electronics manufacturing
Technical Skills
Process optimization and statistical analysis
Equipment troubleshooting and repair
Root cause analysis and problem‑solving methodologies
Project management and implementation
Technical writing and documentation
Data analysis using Excel, Minitab, or similar tools
Key Performance Indicators
Equipment uptime and overall equipment effectiveness (OEE)
First‑pass yield improvements
Cost reduction achievements through process optimization
Throughput improvements and cycle time reductions
Working Environment
Manufacturing floor environment with occasional exposure to chemicals, heat, and noise
Occasional lifting up to 50 lbs
Standing for extended periods
Ability to work flexible hours to support production needs
Travel to supplier locations occasionally for equipment training or troubleshooting
