Responsibilities
Underwrite new and renewal submissions of assigned accounts in accordance with Berkley Offshore Underwriting standards and authority.
Correspond with brokers to gather information needed to evaluate risk characteristics, financials, loss experience, etc. to determine appropriate pricing, terms, and conditions.
Perform technical underwriting duties including pre‑underwriting analysis on new and renewal business, value aggregation accumulation and prepare rate benchmarking data.
Maintain ownership of assigned accounts/clients and ensure high‑quality service and responsiveness.
Ensure timely and accurate issuance of policy documentation in accordance with established service standards.
Proactively support the acquisition of new business and retention of existing business.
Develop and maintain strong relationships with key producers, clients and other relevant stakeholders, which may include travel out of state.
Prepare CAT aggregation worksheets for transmittal to the London office for RMS and Sequel impact modeling.
Collaborate with the Underwriting Assistants and Accounting team to reconcile unapplied cash and pursue overdue premiums from brokers.
Qualifications
BA/BS degree in a related field of study.
5‑10 years of underwriting experience writing profitable ocean cargo lines of business (importers/exporters) with knowledge of freight forwarding and logistics.
Strong understanding of the Ocean Marine market and overall cargo product line.
Ability to assess risk exposures and natural hazards relevant to ocean cargo and logistics lines.
Established relationships with brokers and a solid reputation within the local market.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook).
Basic understanding of accounting or balancing of accounts.
Strong analytical and decision‑making skills with attention to detail.
Excellent communication and negotiation skills, both written and verbal.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively.
