Underwriting Specialist OR Executive Underwriter - MM Financial Institutions

We have assembled a team of Middle Market leaders and underwriters who understand this space deeply and who grasp the unique challenges of the various industry segments and the individual customers we serve.
We are looking to hire an experienced Underwriting Specialist or Executive Underwriter for our NYC office. In this role, you will serve as a customer advocate with a focus on improving the customer experience by understanding their unique risks and offering the best end‑to‑end solution for their Middle Markets Financial Institutions insurance needs. This position is hybrid with two days per week in the New York office.
What you can expect in a Financial Institutions Underwriting Position in Middle Markets at Zurich
You will develop and maintain relationships with brokers, partners, and customers across all industries in support of business objectives.
You will leverage your Financial Institutions underwriting acumen across risk assessment, exposure evaluation, and pricing to generate and maintain a profitable book of new and renewal business.
You will work collaboratively across business units including claims, finance, risk engineering, actuary, and technical underwriting while gaining extensive knowledge in a growing and innovative industry.
You will be empowered to use your technical underwriting, negotiation, and interpersonal skills to grow and develop relationships with preferred distribution partners in your assigned territory.
Basic Qualifications
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market‑Facing area.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 6 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 1 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market‑Facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 4 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Knowledge of line(s) of business and the legal and regulatory guidelines.
Knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience with Microsoft Office.
Executive Underwriter Level
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 5 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market‑Facing area.
High School Diploma or Equivalent and 10 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 3 or more years of experience in the Underwriting or Market‑Facing area.
Zurich Certified Insurance Apprentice including an Associate Degree and 8 or more years of experience in the Claims or Underwriting Support area.
Knowledge of Microsoft Office.
Experience working on time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Experience working in a team environment.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree.
Private Equity Middle Markets Underwriting experience in the Northeast Region.
Ability to effectively assess risk.
Strong negotiation skills.
Strong retail broker relationships.
Superior skills in relationship building, active listening, needs analysis, and win‑win negotiating.
Possess knowledge of time restraints for quotes on new and renewal business.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong knowledge of underwriting philosophy, techniques, national/local filing regulations, and guidelines.
PC and related software skills.
CPCU and ARM a plus.
Compensation The combined salary range for this position is $92,900.00 – $201,300.00. The proposed salary range for the Underwriting Specialist level is $92,900.00 – $152,200.00, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility set at 10%. The proposed salary range for the Executive Underwriter level is $122,900.00 – $201,300.00, with short‑term incentive bonus eligibility set at 15%.
