Overview MasTec Civil is hiring a Senior Estimator to assist in the growth of the North Carolina / South Carolina infrastructure market.

Location: Remote / hybrid position within the state of North Carolina.

This individual should have a minimum of 10 years of estimating experience and a minimum of 3 years of field experience in Heavy Civil Construction, specifically in roadway work such as earth movement, drainage, clearing & grubbing, grading, roadway bases, channel excavation, retaining walls, water main, force main, etc. The candidate should also be knowledgeable in contract delivery methods including design-build, design-bid-build, and Lump Sum, and have contract experience with NC/SCDOT, turnpike, cities, counties, and airport authorities.

This candidate must be a self‑motivated person, willing to collaborate with peers, mentor young engineers, and constantly strive to identify problems and solutions.

MasTec’s Clean Energy and Infrastructure Group (CE&I) is a $4 billion annual revenue business unit that provides construction services for industrial facilities; building products manufacturers, power generation facilities, manufacturing plants; solar, wind, and thermal energy plants; buildings, and infrastructure.

Responsibilities

Understand bid items, basis of estimate, skills to identify errors and discrepancies in plans, specifications, and solutions.

Read plans, specifications, request for proposal, request for information, addendums, technical special provisions, etc.

Build green sheet estimate, breakdown activity structure, construction schedule, and risk matrix analysis.

Create job budget for awarded contracts.

Understand bid strategy, cost savings initiatives, and management skills.

Perform accurate quantity takeoffs within the required time frame.

Capable of individually estimating an entire job.

Study and review all estimating reports: equipment total hours, labor productivity rates, key indicators, equipment balance analysis, etc.

Constantly review updated NC/SCDOT standards and specifications.

Fully review bid submittal package and lead estimating discussions with company executives.

Obtain clarifications on plans and specifications from owner or engineer of records.

Coordinate and invite suppliers and subcontractors to quote different scopes of work.

Analyze suppliers and subcontractor pricing.

Build and strengthen subcontractor and supplier relationships.

Maintain complete understanding of unit cost analyses.

Assist with pre-bid meetings and bid submittals.

Keep updated information regarding commodity trade prices.

Continuously explore construction technologies and techniques.

Maintain continuing education in construction; assist with engineering conventions, forums, etc.

Continue communication with field personnel (project engineer, superintendent, foreman, fleet manager, etc.) to track and adjust as necessary unit costs.

Qualifications

Minimum 10 years of experience in Heavy Civil – roadway / highway / bridge experience preferred.

Strong preference to be located in North or South Carolina.

B.S. in Engineering or Construction Management degree.

Knowledge / Skills / Abilities

Possess high work values, integrity, and ethical standards.

Possess good organization skills and strong verbal and written communication skills.

Must have knowledge in bridge and roadway construction.

Savvy in North Carolina / South Carolina soil (rock / clay), foundations, concrete structures, temporary structural systems, underground and utility work, earthwork, signalization, roadway lighting and signing, intelligent transportation system, safety standards, etc.

Knowledgeable in design-build and design-bid-build contracts with NC / SCDOT and Turnpike Enterprises.

Teaching and mentoring skills.
